Kayla Cromer, who stars in Freeform\u2019s sitcom \u201cEverything\u2019s Gonna Be Okay,\u201d is the first actor with autism to play a character with that same background.\u00a0<\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s amazing, it\u2019s such an honor representing so many who are looking for inclusion onscreen,\u201d Cromer, 23, told The Post. \u201cI take being\u00a0 a role model very seriously.\u201d<\/p>\n

Now entering its second season (April 8 at 10 p.m.), the series<\/a> was created by (and stars) Australian comedia<\/a>n Josh Thomas (\u201cPlease Like Me). It follows neurotic gay thirtysomething entomologist Nicholas (Thomas) who unexpectedly finds himself assuming guardianship over his teen half-sisters: the musically gifted Matilda (Cromer) who is autistic, and her spunky younger sister Genevieve (Maeve Press), an aspiring stand-up comedian.\u00a0<\/p>\n

\u201cWorking with Josh\u2019s huge personality and being around him has definitely helped me understand sarcasm better,\u201d said Cromer. \u201cHe lets me bring my own improv into scenes \u2014 he\u2019s\u00a0 really open to actors\u2019 ideas. He\u2019s just so funny.\u201d<\/p>\n

At the end of Season 1, Matilda, who got into Julliard, tried to do a practice run to prepare to live independently in New York. Unfortunately it didn\u2019t go well, as she became overwhelmed by the subways and crowds. Season 2 sees Matilda attempt to pivot to a new life plan, including weighing going to a local college instead of Juilliard or taking a gap year. It\u2019s an adjustment for her whole family as they try to decide how to help her and how to move forward.\u00a0<\/p>\n

She\u2019s also having relationship troubles since she stopped talking to her girlfriend, Drea (Lillian Carrier) during her college struggles.\u00a0<\/p>\n

\u201cSeason 2 will see hookups, Matilda rethinking her life goals, and lots more bugs,\u201d Cromer said, referring to the bugs that come with Nicholas\u2019 profession.<\/p>\n

Season 2\u2019s guest stars include Maria Bamford and Richard Kind \u2014 and the latter was particularly exciting to Cromer.\u00a0<\/p>\n

\u201cMy dream has always been to be on \u2018Law & Order: SVU\u2019 and his character portrayals on guest roles on that show have been amazing. It was almost a starstruck moment for me, seeing him,\u201d she said.\u00a0<\/p>\n

\u201cDefinitely my favorite part of playing Matilda is that there are so many ways to play her. And having fans see themselves in those scenes \u2014 my [messages on social media] are constantly blowing up with\u00a0 fans saying positive things about her.\u201d<\/p>\n

Cromer said that she thinks the most misunderstood aspect of being autistic is being labeled as \u201cintellectually disabled.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cAll humans are wired differently. We all think and learn differently,\u201d she said.\u00a0<\/p>\n

The prospect of whether an actor needs to share a background with their character \u2014 such as both being autistic \u2014\u00a0 is a hot topic in the entertainment industry.\u00a0\u201cI think it all starts before casting starts,\u201d said Cromer. \u201cIf there\u2019s a character with autism written in, I think the casting call should reflect authentic diversity. But people who are different also shouldn\u2019t be boxed into the same stereotypical roles. Like, a person who is in a wheelchair can play a prosecutor, too.\u201d<\/p>\n

Cromer, who grew up in California, originally wanted to work in criminal profiling for the FBI.\u00a0<\/p>\n

\u201cMy character analysis method is creative, I took the FBI profile analysis process and converted it into the character I play,\u201d she said. \u201cCriminal profiling was my original career path I wanted to pursue, so I put the two together.\u201d\n <\/p><\/div>\n
