This comedian was the David to Harvey Weinstein\u2019s Goliath \u2014 and lived to tell the tale.<\/p>\n

Kelly Bachman made headlines in 2019 for calling out Weinstein <\/a>during a stand-up comedy event that the now-imprisoned mogul<\/a> attended at the Lower East side bar Downtime \u2014 an incident she reflects on in the new FX documentary \u201cHysterical.\u201d<\/p>\n

Premiering April 2 (9 p.m. on FX and hitting Hulu the next day), \u201cHysterical\u201d explores the experiences of women in the comedy world, from superstars Kathy Griffin, Margaret Cho and Sherri Shepherd to relative newcomers like Bachman, who was 27 and unknown at the time that her call-out went viral. <\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s definitely one of those flashbulb memories,\u201d Bachman, now 29, tells The Post. \u201cWhen I think back to that night specifically, it felt like something that should be happ<\/a>ening on a TV show, not in my life. I remember being really nervous, like, \u2018Does this person still have that power to even quietly blacklist me like he used to?\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n

In the now-infamous video footage<\/a>, Bachman gets onstage and addresses the crowd, which included Weinstein, the sex predator sentenced last year to 23 years in prison whom she called the \u201celephant\u201d and the \u201cFreddy Krueger\u201d in the room. At the time, Weinstein had been accused of sexual misconduct by more than 70 women though he had yet to stand trial.<\/p>\n

\u201cI didn\u2019t know that we have to bring our own mace and rape whistles to Actor\u2019s Hour,\u201d she said, and was met with some \u201cboos\u201d and one \u201cshut up!\u201d from the audience. <\/p>\n

\u201cI have been raped \u2014 surprisingly by no one in this room \u2014 but I\u2019ve never gotten to confront those guys,\u201d she continued, eliciting cheers. \u201cSo, just a general<\/a> \u2018f\u2013k you\u2019 to whoever\u2026\u201d<\/p>\n

As a sexual-assault survivor, Bachman, who grew up in North Carolina and is now based in Brooklyn, was overwhelmed by the reaction to her revelation by national media.<\/p>\n

\u201cI wasn\u2019t necessarily ready for that part of my identity to be in the news<\/a> when that went viral. It wasn\u2019t a secret, but it wasn\u2019t broadcast out there. I was already passionate about advocating for these issues. I had produced a show called \u2018Rape Jokes by Survivors,\u2019<\/a> in 2018 before this, and that was important to me. But I wasn\u2019t in<\/em> that show.\u201d<\/p>\n

Because of the sudden flood of messages that she got on social media in 2019, Bachman said that she overlooked many of them \u2014\u00a0and nearly missed it when the producers of \u201cHysterical\u201d reached out to her via direct message on Instagram and Twitter.<\/p>\n

\u201cThat was surreal,\u201d she said. \u201cSeeing them say, \u2018Margaret Cho was talking about you, Nikki Glaser was talking about you, so we want to talk to you because they\u2019re<\/em> talking about you.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n

In the film, Glaser and Cho praise the \u201cbadass\u201d Bachman, and wonder if they would\u2019ve been able to call out Weinstein to his face.\u00a0<\/p>\n

\u201cI feel kind of imposter syndrome any time people call me \u2018brave,\u2019\u201d said Bachman. \u201cI am grateful to be part of this documentary and I\u2019m really grateful to see comedy heroes of mine even knowing my name \u2014 let alone telling me that I did something that they would be proud of, or that would be difficult for them to do. I literally cry when people say things like that. It\u2019s emotional for me.\u201d<\/p>\n

The past pandemic year has been a particularly rough time for the stand-up world, and Bachman has gotten through it by bartending on the side. <\/p>\n

\u201cLike everybody else, I\u2019ve tried to figure out how to be more online,\u201d she said. \u201cI did some outdoor shows last summer in Brooklyn. I\u2019ve been doing Zoom shows here and there. Not a lot, I\u2019ve more retreated to my other interests, just because comedy doesn\u2019t feel as doable without indoors. So I wrote a few pilot scripts, I\u2019ve been writing some songs \u2014 I\u2019m a musician<\/a> as well.\u201d<\/p>\n

She has no immediate plans for an indoor show, even as New York\u2019s comedy clubs are re-opening at 25 percent capacity on April 2. <\/p>\n

\u201cI would like to at least have the vaccine myself [before doing that],\u201d she said. \u201cI think I\u2019ll start producing an outdoor show when it gets warmer. I don\u2019t want to host a super-spreader event; that\u2019s my main goal for 2021.\u201d<\/p>\n

Although Bachman is proud to be known for calling out Weinstein, she doesn\u2019t want to be entirely defined by the incident.<\/p>\n

\u201cIf I Google myself, that\u2019s the narrative that\u2019s out there about me. And it\u2019s an intense narrative to be out there, as a person who wants to spread joy,\u201d she said. \u201cBut if it\u2019s had the impact that some people say it has, that\u2019s the kind of impact I hope to have with my whole life.\u201d\n <\/p><\/div>\n
