What are the commerce related opportunities that you are most excited about? What role do you want Shopify to play?<\/p>\n<p>\u2014 Tobi Lutke  (@tobi) <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/tobi\/status\/1378116793370349569?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">April 2, 2021<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><script async src=\"https:\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script>The inquiry drew hundreds of responses, including from multiple DeFi power players. Nansen\u2019s Alex Svanevik <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/ASvanevik\/status\/1378274724875096068\">mentioned<\/a> stablecoin payments as well as using DeFi protocols to allow cash in Shopify accounts to earn yield, and likewise ConsenSys\u2019 Corbin Page <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/corbpage\/status\/1378312643639963648\">pointed<\/a> to a hackathon project that deposited payments directly into yield-bearing protocols.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>More complex suggestions centered on leveraging deposited funds for payments, real-time sub<a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/download-scripts-themes-apps\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"9\" title=\"Download Scripts &amp; Themes &amp; Apps\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">script<\/a>ion fees, and using protocols like Alchemix to enable asset-backed loans for payments. <\/p>\n<p>While highly speculative in nature, Lutke\u2019s musing do seem to be a sign that he\u2019s caught the crypto bug. Earlier in the day, he <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/tobi\/status\/1378036909939826693\">posted<\/a> that he\u2019d been \u201cdabbling\u201d with smart contracts, referring to their functionality as \u201cfascinating.\u201d Besides the tech, the CEO also seems to be taken with DeFi\u2019s open, permissionless ethos.<\/p>\n<p>In a Tweet, he said that while it certainly won\u2019t fit a purist\u2019s definition of decentralization, one of Shopify\u2019s goals was reducing barriers and friction in online retail \u2014 a spiritual cousin to Defi:<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">Usually companies see a market like retail and say \u201ccool, I\u2019ll go win that market\u201d. Shopify did \u201ccool, let\u2019s make sure everyone can participate\u201d. So in spirit (not by your definition) we are helping push against centralization.
