\n WASHINGTON \u2014 President Trump\u2019s chief of staff Mark Meadows on Monday rejected a national mandate making masks mandatory, saying it is \u201cnot in order.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cWell, it\u2019s certainly a state-to-state issue, as we look across the country, obviously the narrative is the COVID cases are rising, but testing is rising exponentially,\u201d Meadows told \u201cFox & Friends\u201d after the number of new daily cases peaked at 55,220 on Thursday.<\/p>\n

\u201cWhen we look at masks and the wearing of masks, that\u2019s done on a location basis, when you can\u2019t have social<\/a> distancing, but certainly a national mandate is not in order,\u201d he continued, deferring to state leaders.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe\u2019re allowing our local governors and our local mayors to weigh in on that.\u201d<\/p>\n

The president is headed to New Hampshire on Saturday where he will hold a campaign rally at Portsmouth Airport, his first event after a relatively poorly-attended rally in Tulsa, Oklahoma last month.<\/p>\n

Meadows would not say whether Trump will wear a mask, telling Fox: \u201cPresident Trump mentioned he is willing to wear a mask if app<\/a>ropriate in tight quarters.\u201d<\/p>\n

New Jersey Gov. Phil Murphy said Sunday that masks should be a \u201cnational requirement,\u201d making them mandatory in public as a number of states see a record number of infections.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s become almost not even debatable,\u201d he told NBC TV\u2019s \u201cMeet the Press.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cI think it ought to be a national, a national requirement,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

Guidelines still vary from state to state, with Florida and Texas recently making masks mandatory in public.<\/p>\n

The president last week said people \u201cshould\u201d wear masks if they \u201cfeel good about it\u201d but said he didn\u2019t think face coverings needed to be mandatory in public.\n <\/p><\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/div>\n
