If you encounter photographer Andreas P. Verrios during your subway commute, you just might arrive fashionably late.<\/p>\n

That\u2019s because the 36-year-old Harlem resident, who works as a finance attorney by day, spends his off-hours scouting for strap-hanging strangers to strike a pose for modeling campaigns. It\u2019s all part of the strangers-focused series<\/a> on his Mr. NYC Subway social<\/a>-media presence, which counts 160,000 followers<\/a> on Instagram and 1.6 million followers on TikTok<\/a>. <\/p>\n

Since September, Verrios and a videographer have found 18 stylish MTA commuters to show off looks for posts that quickly go viral.<\/p>\n

He told The Post that focusing on subjects whom he doesn\u2019t know is all part of the thrill.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s the mystery factor of not knowing what\u2019s going to happ<\/a>en,\u201d he said. \u201cIt creates this whole new level of excitement.\u201d<\/p>\n

However, it can take several hours to find the right person to snap. And while some people decline to be immortalized, New Yorkers are rarely rude about it.<\/p>\n

\u201cI haven\u2019t had anyone push me off the platform like, \u2018Hell no!\u2019 \u201d said Verrios, who hails from San Diego, Calif. \u201cIf you go to a New Yorker and you tell them what it is you\u2019re doing \u2014 and you\u2019re assertive and honest and you have good energy, I\u2019ve never had [anyone] get upset with me.\u201d<\/p>\n

Specifically, he asks them to pose with items from brands with which Verrios has partnerships \u2014 including hats from Goorin Bros.<\/a>, wrist candy from Stella Watch Company<\/a> and even wearable blankets from the Comfy<\/a>. Verrios and his videographer spend about 15 minutes shooting, but he doesn\u2019t pay the subterranean stars for their participation. He also photographs them as-is without any hair or makeup styling.<\/p>\n

The one thing he looks for: Someone who already put time and effort into how they look that day. <\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s someone who left their apartment dressed to impress,\u201d he said. \u201cEven in this pandemic, you\u2019ll still find people \u2014 it doesn\u2019t matter what day of the week \u2014 with some cool jacket on, or some cool T-shirt with beautiful pants.\u201d<\/p>\n

But different subway stations produce different results.<\/p>\n

\u201cDumbo at York Street,\u201d said Verrios of the F train station in Brooklyn that\u2019s one of his favorites for scouting. \u201cThat crowd that goes into Dumbo, and in and out of York, you\u2019ll always find some people with serious fashion.\u201d<\/p>\n

Another hot station that draws stylish subjects: the Franklin Street 1 stop in Tribeca.<\/p>\n

Another plus: Both of them have good lighting.<\/p>\n

\u201cColumbus Circle is a good place to look, but not a good place to do photoshoots, because the lighting there is terrible,\u201d said Verrios, adding that he doesn\u2019t show up with any flash for his Canon DSLR camera. \u201cI\u2019m very particular about which stations have better lighting compared to others.\u201d<\/p>\n

He\u2019s also done shoots at West 4th Street, Fulton Street and Astor Place.<\/p>\n

Despite the overall goal of advertising, Verrios said he enjoys surprising train riders with a boost in confidence.<\/p>\n
