“#Rep. Torres blames Bronx’s low vaccine rates on ‘digital divide’<\/strong>”<\/p>\n

New York Rep. Ritchie Torres on Sunday blamed lower COVID-19 vaccination rates in the Bronx on the \u201cdigital divide\u201d \u2014 as the state prepares to open the shots to all this week. <\/p>\n

\u201cThe racial disparities in vaccination rates for me is more a consequence of vaccine access than vaccine hesitancy and one of the greatest barriers to vaccine access is the digital divide,\u201d Torres told CBS anchor Margaret Brennan on \u201cFace the Nation.\u201d<\/a><\/p>\n

\u201cThose in the Bronx who have no access to the Internet, have much less access to information about vaccination sites and have no real ability to participate in online registration systems.\u201d<\/p>\n

Torres argued that more app<\/a>ointments need to be available in community health centers.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe\u2019re making progress, but we have to rely heavily on community health centers, community-based institutions that can serve as credible messengers in places like the South Bronx. And I\u2019m optimistic that we are making progress,\u201d the congressman said.<\/p>\n

Only 31 percent of Bronx residents have received at least one vaccine dose, according to data from the city\u2019s Department of Health.<\/p>\n

The figure lags behind the citywide rate of 36 percent and Manhattan\u2019s 44 percent.<\/p>\n

That\u2019s despite the mass-vaccination site run by the city and state at Yankee Stadium in the borough. <\/p>\n

\u201cThere has not been a big expansion of supply so there is just this crush for appointments. It\u2019s very hard to get a vaccine appointment this week in New York City and that has just crowded out people who are vulnerable,\u201d Councilman Mark Levine, chairman of the council\u2019s health committee, told NY1 on Sunday.<\/a><\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s just too hard for people in communities of color to get a vaccine appointment. Many of them are not online and they are not following the bots on Twitter<\/a> that are telling people when appointments are open.\u201d\n <\/p><\/div>\n
