Let\u2019s take a look back at some of the best.<\/p>\n<h2 role=\"heading\" aria-level=\"2\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"What_Are_%E2%80%9CEaster_Eggs%E2%80%9D\"><\/span>What Are \u201cEaster Eggs\u201d?<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p><a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Easter_egg_(media)\">\u201cEaster eggs\u201d<\/a> are developer credits, silly features, or inside jokes hidden in software. Because you can only access these through a <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/watch-movies-tv-seriess\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"8\" title=\"Watch Movies &amp; TV Series\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">series<\/a> of arcane steps resembling an Easter egg hunt, that\u2019s how they got their name.<\/p>\n<p>Easter eggs were a sly, fun way for authors to secretly immortalize themselves in their work, even if individual programmer credits were discouraged for the sake of company unity.<\/p>\n<p>Microsoft\u2019s history with software Easter eggs began as far back as the\u00a0<a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.pagetable.com\/?p=43\">Commodore PET BASIC in the 1970s<\/a>. For example, in Excel \u201995, if you follow a <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/eeggs.com\/items\/719.html\">series of complex steps<\/a>, a window called the \u201cHall of Tortured Souls\u201d appears. In this apparent reference to <em>Doom<\/em>, you can actually roam a 3D, first-person environment. It became an inside joke and unofficial mascot for the operating system.<\/p>\n<p>When the team <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/eeggs.com\/items\/469.html\">hid developer credits in the Program Manager of Windows 3.1<\/a>, the bear naturally made an appearance. The Easter egg normally shows a man in a yellow suit next to a scrolling list of the developers\u2019 internal email system names. Rather, it\u2019s more of a surreal 3D, first-person flying experience over a purple landscape. It displayed endless linkages of pipes, connecting and extending in 3D space.<\/p>\n<p>If you <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/eeggs.com\/items\/493.html\">set the joint style to \u201cmixed,\u201d<\/a>\u00a0in the screensaver\u2019s settings, one of the joints will sometimes be replaced by the famous <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Utah_teapot\">Utah Teapot<\/a>. If you created a new folder on the desktop, <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/eeggs.com\/items\/478.html\">renamed it several times<\/a>, and then opened it, you saw the moving, fading names of the Windows 95 team accompanied by a MIDI musical score. Windows 98 included a <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=N1v7Gg75CT4\">similar developer tribute Easter egg<\/a>.<\/p>\n<h2 role=\"heading\" aria-level=\"2\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Excel_2000_Racing_Game\"><\/span>Excel 2000: Racing Game<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-667448 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.howtogeek.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/04\/car_game.png?trim=1,1&amp;bg-color=000&amp;pad=1,1\" alt=\"The &quot;Spy Hunter&quot; style game in Excel 2000. \" width=\"650\" height=\"483\" onload=\"pagespeed.lazyLoadImages.loadIfVisibleAndMaybeBeacon(this);\" onerror=\"this.onerror=null;pagespeed.lazyLoadImages.loadIfVisibleAndMaybeBeacon(this);\"\/><\/p>\n<p>According to some Microsoft insiders (see the comments <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/web.archive.org\/web\/20160609232028\/https:\/\/blogs.msdn.microsoft.com\/jensenh\/2005\/10\/07\/why-is-it-called-the-ribbon\/\">on this blog post<\/a>), Office 2000 was the last version of the software to include Easter eggs as sanctioned by Microsoft management.<\/p>\n<p>However,\u00a0that might be true for Windows versions only, as a developer did hide a game of <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/cpo1.wordpress.com\/2009\/10\/23\/office-2004-for-mac-easter-egg\/\">Asteroids in Office 2004<\/a>\u00a0for Mac.<\/p>\n<p>Excel 2000 made sure Easter eggs went out with a bang!\u00a0<a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/eeggs.com\/items\/8240.html\">A 3D car racing\/shooting game<\/a> reminiscent of the arcade classic <em><a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Spy_Hunter\">Spy Hunter<\/a>\u00a0<\/em>was included in the software. In 2007, a <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/web.archive.org\/web\/20070614161233\/http:\/\/inicia.es\/de\/kwisatz\/index.html\">Spanish blogger with the screenname Kwisatz<\/a> discovered something stunning on the holographic anti-piracy label on the Windows Vista Business DVD. It was a\u00a0tiny (less than 1mm wide) photograph of three men. <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/news\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"2\" title=\"News\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">News<\/a> of this discovery rattled through the blogosphere until Microsoft <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/web.archive.org\/web\/20070616140904\/windowsvistablog.com\/blogs\/windowsvista\/archive\/2007\/06\/13\/the-devil-is-in-the-details.aspx\">responded officially about four days later<\/a> in a blog post.<\/p>\n<p>It turns out the three men were members of Microsoft\u2019s anti-piracy team. They hid the photo of themselves and several public domain paintings as part of the label\u2019s anti-piracy technique.
