NBA hall-of-famer Charles Barkley laid into politicians of all strip<\/a>es \u2013 Democrats and Republicans alike \u2013 for promoting racial division in the country, saying they are trying to \u201cmake whites and blacks not like each other.\u201d<\/p>\n

Barkley, a former star forward with the Philadelphia 76ers, was speaking during CBS Sports\u2019 broadcast of the Final Four on Saturday.<\/p>\n

He was responding to a pre-game segment about Sen. Robert F. Kennedy\u2019s alerting a crowd in Indianapolis \u2013 site of this year\u2019s games \u2013 in 1968 that the Rev. Martin Luther King had been assassinated in Memphis.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Barkley, never one to shy away from controversial statements, said politicians \u201cdivide and conquer\u201d the population for their own ends.<\/p>\n

\u201cMan, I think most white people and \u200bb\u200black people are great people. I really believe that in my heart, but I think our system is set up where our politicians, whether they\u2019re Republicans or Democrats, are designed to make us not like each other so they can keep their grasp of money and power. They divide and conquer\u200b,\u201d Barkely, who retired from the NBA in 2000 said.\u00a0<\/p>\n

\u201c\u200bI truly believe in my heart most white people and \u200bb\u200black people are awesome people, but we\u2019re so stupid following our politicians, whether they\u2019re Republicans or Democrats, and their only job is, \u2018Hey, let\u2019s make these people not like each other. We don\u2019t live in their neighborhoods, we all got \u200bthe \u200bmoney, let\u2019s make the whites and \u200bb\u200blacks not like each other, let\u2019s make rich people and poor people not like each other, let\u2019s scramble the middle class.\u2019 I truly believe that in my heart\u200b,\u201d he continued.\u00a0\u200b<\/p>\n

His comments come at a time of racial tension in the country and amid the continuing trial of former Minneapolis police officer Derek Chauvin for the killing of George Floyd last May.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Chauvin\u2019s trial on second-degree murder, third-degree murder and second-degree manslaughter began last week and testimony continues Monday.\u00a0\n <\/p><\/div>\n
