Eli Roth<\/strong>\u2018s\u00a0Borderlands<\/strong><\/em> movie has found its villain.<\/p>\n

Edgar Ramirez<\/strong> (Carlos<\/em>, Gold<\/em>, the Point Break<\/em> remake) will play a character named Atlas, who\u2019s described as \u201ca business titan and arms manufacturer, and the most powerful person in the universe.\u201d The movie, which has been filming since the beginning of this month in Hungary, is based on the popular video game<\/a> franchise \u2013 and Lionsgate has revealed the first official plot details for the film adaptation.<\/span><\/p>\n

In a press release, Lionsgate announced that Edgar Ramirez is playing the Borderlands<\/em> villain in the upcoming movie, which has a screenplay by two-time Emmy-winning screenwriter Craig Mazin<\/strong> (Chernobyl<\/em>, HBO\u2019s upcoming adaptation of The Last of Us<\/em>). The studio also unveiled the movie\u2019s official synopsis, which reads as follows:<\/p>\n

Two-time Academy Award\u00ae winner Cate Blanchett<\/strong> teams up with Kevin Hart<\/strong> in director Eli Roth\u2019s\u00a0Borderlands<\/i>. Lilith (Blanchett), an infamous outlaw with a mysterious past, reluctantly returns to her home planet of Pandora to find the missing daughter of the universe\u2019s most powerful S.O.B., Atlas (Ramirez). Lilith forms an alliance with an unexpected team \u2013 Roland (Hart), a former elite mercenary, now desperate for redemption; Tiny Tina (Ariana Greenblatt<\/strong>), a feral pre-teen demolitionist; Krieg (Florian Munteanu<\/strong>), Tina\u2019s musclebound, rhetorically challenged protector; Tannis (Jamie Lee Curtis<\/strong>), the scientist with a tenuous grip on sanity; and Claptrap (Jack Black<\/strong>), a persistently wiseass robot. These unlikely heroes must battle alien monsters and dangerous bandits to find and protect the missing girl, who may hold the key to unimaginable power. The fate of the universe could be in their hands \u2013 but they\u2019ll be fighting for something more: each other. \u201cWhat an\u00a0incredible honor to have an actor of Edgar\u2019s caliber, talent, and charisma playing opposite Cate Blanchett and this remarkable cast,\u201d Roth said in a statement. \u201cAtlas has to be a truly magnetic personality, someone with charisma and charm but that air of menace underneath it all. I\u2019ve been a fan of Edgar\u2019s since his early performances and he continues to amaze me with each dramatic turn. Giving audiences a new perspective on his performers seems to be at the top of Roth\u2019s mind, since he\u2019s previously said that Kevin Hart will have a more straightforward dramatic role here instead of the wise-cracking sidekick he\u2019s often played on screen. From Roth\u2019s descript<\/a>ion, this role sounds a little bit like Demi\u00e1n Bechir\u2019s character in Godzilla vs. Kong<\/em>: a powerful rich guy who will be chewing up the scenery while the action unfolds.<\/p>\n

Lionsgate has not set a release date for Borderlands<\/em> yet.<\/p>\n
