To our knowledge no one has written a song for tenor banjo titled, \u201cMoonlight on Jumby Bay\u201d or \u201cMy Jumby Bay Baby.\u201d They should.<\/p>\n

A postcard-perfect private island off the coast of Antigua (four hours from New York, two and a half from Miami), Jumby Bay<\/a> is the sort of place that gave blender cocktails and palm-thatched cabanas their good name.<\/p>\n

But if you\u2019ve been around a little and made your millions, you already know that. <\/p>\n

This clubby, upscale isle \u2014 where champagne is the local quaff, golf carts rule the roads, fine dining the default and a night\u2019s stay goes from $3,500 to well over $10,000 \u2014 has been a haven for British aristos, Greenwich financiers and Hollywood whosits since it was first developed in the 1980s.<\/p>\n

While it concedes to hosting a small number of outsiders with just 28 splashy resort bungalows (now managed by the five-star Oetker Collection) nestled across from the central clubhouse, Veranda restaurant and Casamigos pop-up tequila bar \u2014 the majority of the 300-acre island is given over to 56 exclusive tropical estates. <\/p>\n

Those commodious chateaux are owned and occupied by the likes of Domenico Dolce and Stefano Gabbana, David Sainsbury, Oprah Winfrey and, once upon a time, \u201cLifestyle\u2019s of the Rich and Famous\u201d icon Robin Leach.<\/p>\n

It\u2019s even rumored that the elite isle snubbed Princess Diana for fear of unwanted publicity.<\/p>\n

But, according to Andrew Robson, Jumby\u2019s real estate liaison, the island isn\u2019t far from giving the entire world the \u201cno vacancy\u201d treatment, thanks to \u00a0pandemic-driven interest.<\/p>\n

\u201cI think COVID has made people act.\u201d said Robson, who noted that just six homes on the entire island (with names like Bananaquit, Sea Breeze and Whispering Palms) are still on the market, asking between \u00a0$9.5 million and $28 million. \u201cWe had a December that started with a bang and never let up.\u00a0The plan is to sell out this year. We\u2019ve never had a situation where there is nothing for sale.\u201d<\/p>\n

Prices are poised to leap, but one thing that will not change at Jumby is its resolutely relaxed air for those zillionaires who have had it with conspicuous consumption.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s very understated,\u201d observed Robson. \u201cIt\u2019s not a flash place. For some people, it isn\u2019t quite as glitzy as they want it to be. But for others, and for the people who end up owning here, it\u2019s perfect and comfortable with itself.\u201d\n <\/p><\/div>\n
