Give Mayor Bill de Blasio a mild \u201cyay?\u201d for saying he\u2019ll change the city\u2019s insanely overcautious rules on closing schools over COVID fears. Maybe he\u2019ll deserve actual cheers once he actually gets around to setting <\/em>the new standard. <\/p>\n

Right now, just two positive tests shut down a whole building, which can mean several schools, for up to two weeks. That leads to on-again\/off-again cycles that drive parents crazy, since the sudden need for extra child care can upend your work schedule, while the constant changes and uncertainty can confuse and upset kids.<\/p>\n

School buildings have closed 1,852 times under the rule, the Department of Education reports. Now the mayor says he and his team have \u201clooked at the data\u201d and the science<\/a> and concluded \u201cit\u2019s time for a change.\u201d But that\u2019s been obvious for months \u2014 and he still won\u2019t even say when <\/em>he\u2019ll have new rules, let alone hint at what they\u2019ll be.<\/p>\n

He\u2019s plainly still worried about offending United Federation of Teachers boss Mike Mulgrew, who\u2019s publicly denouncing any softening of the ridiculous unscientific rules.<\/p>\n

De Blasio\u2019s also extending the opt-in-to-in-person-classes deadline (the last of the school year) so parents can react to his new-rule news<\/a> \u2014 yet he\u2019s giving families next to no info on how much better things will be. That\u2019s no way to get the roughly 70 percent of kids who are still all-remote back into class where they have a far better chance of actually learning. <\/p>\n

Sadly, de Blasio\u2019s school-reopening achievements top those of many other big-liberal-city mayors. We chalk that up to the mayoral-control law, which lets everyone hold the mayor personally responsible for how the schools are run, as with last month\u2019s rally outside DOE headquarters demanding that schools fully reopen.<\/p>\n

As Eleni Filippatos, a third-grade teacher, said there: \u201cOur schools have been safe. There is no reason to continue keeping me and\u00a0my students home for 10, 20 days\u00a0at a time.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n

The longer de Blasio dawdles, the more ground the kids lose.\n <\/p><\/div>\n
