We\u2019ll explain why.<\/p>\n<p>Many camera apps that come pre-installed on phones nowadays have their own built-in editing tools. Many people are content with these tools, and something with a name like \u201cPhotoshop\u201d is intimidating. That\u2019s where Snapseed really shines. Nik Software, a small company from California, created the photo-editing app. The app quickly gained popularity and was named <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.zdnet.com\/article\/apple-picks-its-top-iphone-and-ipad-apps-of-2011\/\">iPad App of the Year<\/a> by Apple.<\/p>\n<p>Later that year, Nik Software launched Snapseed for the iPhone, and a year after that, for the Windows desktop. Soon afterward, Google acquired the company, and an Android version was released. The desktop version was eventually discontinued.<\/p>\n<p>Snapseed received a big \u201c2.0\u201d update in 2015, and it has continued to receive consistent updates for the iPhone, iPad, and Android devices ever since. However, it\u2019s not a product that you hear Google talk about very often despite being quite well-reviewed on both platforms.<\/p>\n<h2 role=\"heading\" aria-level=\"2\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Simple_Yet_Powerful\"><\/span>Simple Yet Powerful<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>The best thing about Snapseed is that it condenses many impressive and powerful editing tools into an easy-to-use interface. It\u2019s approachable without being over-simplified.<\/p>\n<p>When you first open the app, you\u2019re greeted with a big \u201c+\u201d button in the center of the screen. That\u2019s it. Tapping this button will take you to your photo gallery, where you can pick a photo to work on.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-722055\" src=\"https:\/\/www.howtogeek.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/04\/2021-04-02_16-46-37.png?trim=1,1&amp;bg-color=000&amp;pad=1,1\" alt=\"open a photo\" width=\"447\" height=\"272\" onload=\"pagespeed.lazyLoadImages.loadIfVisibleAndMaybeBeacon(this);\" onerror=\"this.onerror=null;pagespeed.lazyLoadImages.loadIfVisibleAndMaybeBeacon(this);\"\/><\/p>\n<p>After picking a photo, you\u2019re taken to the editing screen. Snapseed doesn\u2019t hit you over the head with a bunch of tools right away. You\u2019re first shown a row of filters similar to what you\u2019d see on Instagram. These allow you to change the look of your photo with a single tap.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-722053\" src=\"https:\/\/www.howtogeek.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/04\/2021-04-02_14-52-05.png?trim=1,1&amp;bg-color=000&amp;pad=1,1\" alt=\"snapseed filters\" width=\"449\" height=\"179\" onload=\"pagespeed.lazyLoadImages.loadIfVisibleAndMaybeBeacon(this);\" onerror=\"this.onerror=null;pagespeed.lazyLoadImages.loadIfVisibleAndMaybeBeacon(this);\"\/><\/p>\n<p>If the filters aren\u2019t enough, you can take a step up to the \u201cTools\u201d tab. This is where the more powerful editing tools live. They\u2019re presented in a friendly manner with icons and clear labels. Even if you\u2019re not familiar with all of the terms, the icons give you a hint.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-722052\" src=\"https:\/\/www.howtogeek.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/04\/2021-04-02_14-51-54.png?trim=1,1&amp;bg-color=000&amp;pad=1,1\" alt=\"snapseed tools\" width=\"449\" height=\"437\" onload=\"pagespeed.lazyLoadImages.loadIfVisibleAndMaybeBeacon(this);\" onerror=\"this.onerror=null;pagespeed.lazyLoadImages.loadIfVisibleAndMaybeBeacon(this);\"\/><\/p>\n<p>If there\u2019s one thing I\u2019d knock Snapseed for, it\u2019s how it uses gestures for adjusting the effects. The app doesn\u2019t really explain the gestures very well, although I do like them now that I understand how they work.<\/p>\n<p>Basically, depending on the tool, you slide your finger vertically to choose the parameter, and then horizontally to adjust the value. For example, for the \u201cWhite Balance\u201d tool, the parameters are \u201cTemperature\u201d and \u201cTint.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Once you\u2019re done editing your photo, it\u2019s time to \u201cExport\u201d it. Snapseed once again makes the options here easy to understand. You can share the photo directly without having to use another app if that\u2019s all you need to do. The one that I seem to open Snapseed the most for is called \u201cHealing.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The Healing tool is meant to get rid of blemishes, but it can do much more than that. I\u2019ve used it to remove crumbs from my kid\u2019s face and stains from shirts. You simply tap the undesirable spot, and Snapseed will try to match it to the surrounding area.<\/p>\n<figure style=\"width: 608px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-722054\" src=\"https:\/\/www.howtogeek.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/04\/2021-04-02_16-30-35.png?trim=1,1&amp;bg-color=000&amp;pad=1,1\" alt=\"heal tool before and after\" width=\"608\" height=\"600\" onload=\"pagespeed.lazyLoadImages.loadIfVisibleAndMaybeBeacon(this);\" onerror=\"this.onerror=null;pagespeed.lazyLoadImages.loadIfVisibleAndMaybeBeacon(this);\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-caption-text\">Removing a hair with the Healing tool.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>The generic-sounding \u201cTune Image\u201d tool is a good catch-all for a lot of things. The parameters include brightness, contrast, saturation, ambiance, highlights, shadows, and warmth. The \u201cSelective\u201d tool has a few of the same parameters, but you can use it in specific areas of the photo.<\/p>\n<p>If you\u2019re looking for a cool\u2014and somewhat creepy\u2014tool, try out \u201cHead Pose.\u201d It allows you to make adjustments to your head\u2019s angle or your smile as well as artificially change the focal length. If you overdo it, the results can be a little frightening, but for subtle tweaks, it\u2019s pretty neat.<\/p>\n<h2 role=\"heading\" aria-level=\"2\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Give_Snapseed_a_Try\"><\/span>Give Snapseed a Try<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>The point of this piece isn\u2019t to get you to ditch your current photo editing app of choice. In fact, for the majority of my own smartphone photo editing, I use Google Photos. However, Snapseed is an important tool to have under my belt for those few occasions when I need something more.<\/p>\n<p>Snapseed has over a million reviews on the <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/play.google.com\/store\/apps\/details?id=com.niksoftware.snapseed&amp;hl=en_US&amp;gl=US\">Google Play Store<\/a> with a 4.5\/5 rating. On the <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/apps.apple.com\/us\/app\/snapseed\/id439438619\">Apple App Store<\/a>, it has 6 thousand reviews with a 3.9\/5 rating.
