{"id":220673,"date":"2021-04-06T23:41:44","date_gmt":"2021-04-06T20:41:44","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/en.buradabiliyorum.com\/should-ontarios-rollout-prioritize-essential-work-over-age\/"},"modified":"2021-04-06T23:41:44","modified_gmt":"2021-04-06T20:41:44","slug":"should-ontarios-rollout-prioritize-essential-work-over-age","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/should-ontarios-rollout-prioritize-essential-work-over-age\/","title":{"rendered":"#Should Ontario&#8217;s rollout prioritize essential work over age?"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>&#8220;<strong>#Should Ontario&#8217;s rollout prioritize essential work over age?<\/strong>&#8221;<\/p>\n<div>\n                            Vaxx Populi: Waiting until the peak of the third wave has passed before vaccinating essential workers doesn&#8217;t make sense, says an expert\n                        <\/div>\n<div>\n                                                                        <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">As Ontario\u2019s third wave intensifies\u2014on April 6, it posted 3,065 new cases of COVID-19, an average increase of more than 30 per cent in a week\u2014the question is being asked: Should the province change course when it comes to its vaccine rollout and prioritize essential workers who can\u2019t work from home and who are now being infected with COVID-19 in increasingly high numbers?\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Certainly, <\/span><a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/DFisman\/status\/1379463791197446147?s=20\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">the majority of new cases are in<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">people under the age of 50<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. The number of workplace outbreaks is growing quickly. Peel Region, whose warehouses and distribution centres service the entire country, <\/span><a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.peelregion.ca\/coronavirus\/case-status\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">reports 368 workplace outbreaks<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u2014including 137 at manufacturing and industrial sites, 35 at distribution sites and 15 at transportation firms\u2014as of April 6. <\/span><a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.thestar.com\/politics\/provincial\/2021\/04\/05\/all-peel-schools-to-shut-down-move-online.html\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Peel closed its schools to in-person learning<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> while <\/span><a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.tdsb.on.ca\/News\/Article-Details\/ArtMID\/474\/ArticleID\/1622\/Toronto-Public-Heath-Orders-Toronto-Schools-to-Close-to-In-Person-Learning\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Toronto did the same on Tuesday<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> as case counts among staff and students surged.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote><p><strong>RELATED:\u00a015 questions about the AstraZeneca vaccine in wake of new recommendations<\/strong><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The situation is grim, especially in hospitals in the Greater Toronto Area, with many medical staff turning to <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/social-mediaa\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"1\" title=\"Social Media\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">social media<\/a> to drive home the seriousness of the situation. Ontario doesn\u2019t track how many of those in hospital are essential workers, but the anecdotal evidence from the front lines suggests they comprise<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">a rising share. On April 6,\u00a0 Dr. Shankar Sivananthan, a critical care doctor at the William Osler Health System, tweeted: \u201cAs a reminder to the horrifying absurdity of COVID in the GTA. Was about to intubate someone who just lost parents to COVID. I call family to let them know, and their question is: \u2018We were about to make funeral arrangements for the parents. Should we wait to include &lt;patient&gt;\u2019 \u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Because of the new variants, younger people<\/span><a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/covid19-sciencetable.ca\/sciencebrief\/covid-19-hospitalizations-icu-admissions-and-deaths-associated-with-the-new-variants-of-concern\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> are being admitted to hospital and intensive care units at higher rates<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> than before. Dr. Michael Warner, the medical director of critical care at Toronto\u2019s Michael Garron Hospital, has detailed some of those cases, including a financial services worker in his early 30s whose boss mandated that he show \u201cface time\u201d in the office, where he acquired COVID-19. He <\/span><a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/drmwarner\/status\/1379098991208538116?s=20\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">got a blood clot and was intubated in the ICU<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>On Tuesday, the province put out updated guidance for its Phase 2 rollout (which it is currently in the midst of). The only change since <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.health.gov.on.ca\/en\/pro\/programs\/publichealth\/coronavirus\/docs\/vaccine\/COVID-19_Phase_2_vaccination_prioritization.pdf\">March 23<\/a> is to push forward the timing for when groups are expected to be vaccinated, in recognition that more doses are arriving faster. Yet, the compression isn\u2019t even: While those age 60 and older are expected to be vaccinated by the end of April versus the beginning of June under the older plan, the timing for vaccinations of essential workers has advanced only two weeks from the start of June to mid-May.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><strong>RELATED:\u00a0What can Canadians do after getting the first dose of the COVID-19 vaccines?<\/strong><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The focus is preventing deaths, illness and transmission, government officials repeatedly stated in a briefing. \u201cThose early in Phase 2 are at the gravest individual risk. We want to make sure we focus on those areas that have the greatest chance of illness and deaths,\u201d an official explained. So the government has decided that adults over 60, as well as those with the highest-risk health conditions, those living in congregate settings, such as homeless shelters or jails, and those in highest-risk communities will be vaccinated ahead of essential workers who cannot work from home.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cIt\u2019s a really major error,\u201d <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">says Dr. Andrew Morris<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, an infectious diseases physician at Sinai Health and University Health Network in Toronto and a member of the province\u2019s independent COVID-19 <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/sciencee\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"5\" title=\"Science\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Science<\/a> Advisory Table. \u201cI think one of the things that everyone has recognized [is] the preponderance of essential workers who have ended up in the hospital. And to wait until what is likely the back half of the third wave to be over before vaccinating essential workers makes no sense to me.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cI\u2019m a doctor, I got vaccinated a long time ago,\u201d Morris says. \u201cNot only is [my being vaccinated] beneficial to me, and it\u2019s also beneficial to those around me, including patients, because of their vulnerabilities. And I\u2019m needed to work.\u201d At the same time, he points out, \u201cWe have all these other essential workers, who by the nature of their work are essential. And they also expose all those other people around them to infection, if they get infected. The difference between me and them is that I can afford to take some time off and most of them can\u2019t.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote><p><strong>RELATED:\u00a0COVID-19 in Canada: How our battle to stop the pandemic is going<\/strong><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Morris says that the current plan is \u201ca failure of prioritization, or pivoting\u201d to the new reality of the third wave. \u201cWhereas, it\u2019s true that this is a disease that has targeted older individuals, at this point in time, I think it\u2019s pretty certain for us that essential workers and their families have an extremely high likelihood of coming down with COVID-19 and ending up in hospital. And so they really need to be boosted up [in the plan].\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/experts.mcmaster.ca\/display\/chaglaz\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Dr. Zain Chagla, <\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">an infectious diseases physician at St. Joseph\u2019s Healthcare in Hamilton, Ont, notes that Ontario\u2019s plan also focuses on those 50 and older living in hot spots, identified by postal codes, where the rate of cases is high and there are often sizable lower income and racialized communities. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cThey likely do represent some of the essential workers at higher risk of death and disability,\u201d Chagla explained in a message to <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Maclean\u2019s<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. \u201cHowever, if we\u2019re going to use vaccinations to dramatically curb transmission, there needs to be a significant shift to really get to essential workers and their communities, even down to the age of 16 to 18, rather than other at-risk individuals who are able to stay home.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If Morris were in control, \u201cthe only people who should be out and about are essential workers, maybe kids and teachers. So, you define what are your essential workers and then you vaccinate all of them.\u201d As for everyone else, including those currently ahead of essential workers in the province\u2019s plan, Morris believes \u201cthey should be, by and large, staying at home or being outdoors for exercise.\u201d And only after those staying at home begin to be vaccinated should the province open up the economy. \u201cIt\u2019s beyond me where we are at right now.
