There\u2019s something quite cathartic about watching a rusted old heap transform into a zero emission beauty.<\/p>\n<p>                <iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/fast.wistia.net\/embed\/iframe\/avz903cxvd?videoFoam=true&amp;autoplay=true&amp;silentAutoPlay=true\" title=\"Bumper 06 Video\" allow=\"autoplay; fullscreen\" allowtransparency=\"true\" frameborder=\"0\" scrolling=\"no\" class=\"wistia_embed\" name=\"wistia_embed\" allowfullscreen=\"\" msallowfullscreen=\"\" width=\"100%\" height=\"100%\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>The principles behind electric restomods are simple: take an old car, restore it aesthetically, remove the old engine, fabricate some custom mounts, and throw in an electric motor and some batteries.<\/p>\n<p>In reality, it\u2019s never that simple. There are quite a few more vital components that need to be installed. One that gets mentioned a fair bit, is the battery management system (BMS). But what is it, and what does it do?<\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Its_all_about_safety\"><\/span>It\u2019s all about safety<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span>Its name is kind of self explanatory\u2026 the battery management system manages your\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"c-mrkdwn__highlight\">EV\u2019<\/span><span>s high-voltage battery \u2014 the big block that makes it \u2018go\u2019 \u2014 but there\u2019s actually a lot more to it than that.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>The reason why many are baffled by battery management systems (BMS) is because it\u2019s basically new tech. There\u2019s not really an equivalent in earth-killing gas cars, but we could say it\u2019s like the ECU. It\u2019s a custom circuit board, designed to look after the battery.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>In essence though, the BMS in an EV is a critical safety feature.<\/p>\n<p>In hardware terms, the BMS is a collection of purpose built circuit boards and processors that compute input from the battery, and provide an output that either tells the driver something, or tells another part of the car to do something.<\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s there to keep a watchful eye over what your EV\u2019s battery is doing, how it\u2019s feeling, and y\u2019know just <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/general\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"3\" title=\"General\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">general<\/a>ly relaying its vibe.<\/p>\n<p>Seriously though, high-voltage EV batteries are dangerous bits of kit when they don\u2019t operate within set parameters. If batteries aren\u2019t looked after, they could catch fire, overheat, or become unusable \u2014 so the BMS makes you and the EV less dead.<\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Whats_it_doing\"><\/span>What\u2019s it doing?<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>For a BMS to work effectively it needs data; it needs to know what\u2019s h<a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/download-scripts-themes-apps\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"9\" title=\"Download Scripts &amp; Themes &amp; Apps\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">app<\/a>ening in the battery constantly.<\/p>\n<p>A BMS will take regular readings of temperature, voltage, current, and even coolant flow, so that it can make sure the power pack is operating safely. It will also calculate the battery\u2019s charge level, and relay that to the driver, so they know their range.<\/p>\n<p>When it comes to voltage, the BMS doesn\u2019t just monitor the overall voltage of the battery. It can monitor individual cells and packs. If a cell fails, the BMS will be able to identify it, and stop using it to ensure it doesn\u2019t become a hazard.<\/p>\n<p>The BMS will also monitor the flow of electricity in and out of the battery. To do this, the BMS continually reads the battery\u2019s overall average temperature, coolant temperatures, and even the temperatures of individual cells.<\/p>\n<p>Lithium-ion cells used in EV batteries last longest and charge best when kept within predetermined temperature limits.<\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s the BMS\u2019 job to continually monitor the battery, and step in if it\u2019s getting too hot. In EVs with active cooling, the BMS can trigger battery cooling systems to ensure its safe operation.<\/p>\n<p>On hot days, when fast-charging, it\u2019s quite common to hear an EV\u2019s cooling system kick into action to keep the batteries at a safe temperature.<\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Its_a_brain\"><\/span>It\u2019s a brain<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>Whilst the battery management system is primarily concerned with monitoring an EV\u2019s battery, it does so much more than that.<\/p>\n<p>It interacts with a host of other important components such as the internal charging controller, the motors, and external chargers, too.<\/p>\n<p>In all these cases the BMS checks in with battery, to make sure it\u2019s operating as it should, before communicating with the other components to tell them it\u2019s ok to draw power.<\/p>\n<p>Without a BMS, batteries would be unsafe, wouldn\u2019t last very long, and EVs just wouldn\u2019t work.
