\n Chris Meloni says his return to the \u201cLaw & Order\u201d roster as Elliot Stabler \u2014 in the fall spinoff series<\/a> \u201cLaw & Order: Organized Crime\u201d \u2014 took him by surprise.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt truly came about by [series creator] Dick Wolf calling and saying he wanted to discuss a project,\u201d Meloni, 59, tells The Post. \u201cI was like, \u2018Oh, really? OK.\u2019 I was shocked.<\/p>\n

\u201cI never thought this was going to happ<\/a>en, but the circumstances for me changed,\u201d he says. \u201cSo \u2018yes\u2019 became the correct answer.\u201d<\/p>\n

Meloni left \u201cLaw & Order: SVU\u201d in 2011 after playing Det. Stabler for 12 seasons opposite Mariska Hargitay\u2019s Det. Olivia Benson (who now holds the rank of Captain as \u201cSVU\u201d enters its 22nd season).<\/p>\n

The reasons for his departure were never confirmed and Meloni was written off the NBC series \u2014 his exit explained in the Season 13 premiere when it was revealed that Stabler, married with five kids, had retired from the force following a deadly, self-defense shooting in the Season 12 finale<\/p>\n

\u201cHow I left was a different issue and had nothing to do with the \u2018Law & Order\u2019 people, the \u2018SVU\u2019 people or with Dick Wolf,\u201d Meloni says. \u201cI left with zero animosity, but I did leave clearly and open-eyed in going forward and finding new adventures.<\/p>\n

\u201cI was like, \u2018That\u2019s what I want to do, keep moving forward,\u2019 \u201d he says. \u201cI had done the \u2018Law & Order\u2019 way of storytelling, which they do really well, and I was interested in telling stories from a different angle \u2014 whether comedic or inhabiting a new world or doing it on different platforms.\u201d<\/p>\n

Since leaving \u201cSVU,\u201d his long TV resume includes appearances on \u201cTrue Blood,\u201d \u201cThe Handmaid\u2019s Tale,\u201d \u201cPose\u201d and \u201cVeep,\u201d starring roles in \u201cSurviving Jack\u201d (Fox) and \u201cHappy!\u201d (Syfy) and two \u201cWet Hot American Summer\u201d movies on Netflix. In \u201cMAXXX,\u201d premiering July 28 on Hulu, he plays Don Wild \u2014 a drug-fueled, perpetually tan, earring-and-kilt-wearing record producer backing the solo comeback of onetime Boy Band wonder MAXXX (played by series creator O-T Fagbenle).<\/p>\n

\u201cLaw & Order: Organized Crime\u201d finds Stabler returning to the NYPD following \u201ca devastating personal loss\u201d as he\u2019s put in charge of a task force cracking down on mob activity. \u201cHe must adapt to a criminal justice system in the midst of its own moment of reckoning,\u201d according to NBC. \u201cThroughout the series, we will follow Stabler\u2019s journey to find absolution and rebuild his life \u2026\u201d<\/p>\n

Production on the series has been delayed due to the pandemic shutdown; when the fall season (eventually) begins, it will air Thursdays at 10 p.m. \u2014 immedia<\/a>tely following \u201cSVU.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cDick gave me a general<\/a> brush stroke of the unit that Elliot will be a part of,\u201d Meloni says. \u201cThe whys, what fors, what brings him back to the fold and where he\u2019s been.\u201d As for Stabler\u2019s \u201cdevastating personal loss,\u201d Meloni says \u201cwe\u2019ll leave it at that.\u201d<\/p>\n

He does say, though, that he expects Stabler and Benson to reunite in crossover episodes.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt just has to be,\u201d he says. \u201cBenson and Stabler are inextricably linked, locked and connected. I think there is truly and deeply a worthwhile, inherent drama in exploring that relationship and the complexity of how Stabler left \u2014 the unresolved emotions both characters feel and how the fans feel.<\/p>\n

\u201cHow my character left was really unsatisfying, I think,\u201d he says. \u201cIt almost feels that we won\u2019t do one or two [crossover] episodes and move on our merry way.<\/p>\n

\u201cI just think there will always be possibilities there,\u201d he says. \u201cPeople will always be hungry to see how we interact and how that dynamic has changed.\u201d\n <\/p><\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/div>\n
