It\u2019s been a rough ride for the Ruff Ryder.\u00a0<\/p>\n

DMX, the howling hip-hop legend who\u2019s fighting for his life<\/a> at White Plains Hospital after suffering a drug-induced heart attack, had a tough row to hoe growing up.\u00a0<\/p>\n

\u201c[My mother] beat two teeth out <\/a>of my f \u2013 \u2013 king mouth with a broom,\u201d he told GQ in 2019 of the abuse he reportedly endured at the hands of his mother when DMX was only 6 years old.\u00a0<\/p>\n

And in his early teens, his then-mentor allegedly tricked him into smoking marijuana laced with crack cocaine.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Before his booming baritone and wizardly wordplay on tracks such as \u201cRuff Ryder\u2019s Anthem\u201d and \u201cParty Up (Lose My Mind)\u201d earned him multiplatinum-selling artist status, he was just a troubled kid from Yonkers named Earl Simmons.\u00a0<\/p>\n

\u201cEarl is a person who still holds onto a lot of things he suffered<\/a> in the past, as a child,\u201d his former manager, Nakia Walker, told Houston Press in 2011.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n

\u201cHe holds onto things, instead of talking about things and releasing. He expresses himself through his music.\u201d<\/p>\n

But now, Dark Man X, 50, is on life support and in a \u201cvegetative state\u201d as his family and fans hold vigil at the medical facility. He will reportedly undergo a series<\/a> of critical brain function tests Wednesday.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Born December 18, 1970, in Mount Vernon, New York, to parents Joe Barker and Arnett Simmons, the future Grammy-nominated maestro felt unloved from the get-go.\u00a0<\/p>\n

\u201c[My father] never called me on my birthday <\/a>or helped raise me at all,\u201d Simmons recounted in his 2002 autobiography, \u201cE.A.R.L.<\/a>\u201d In his memoir, the rapp<\/a>er said Barker, an artist, only came around when he had to sell paintings in New York City.\u00a0<\/p>\n

DMX believed his mom, who was only 19 years old when she became pregnant with him, didn\u2019t know how to love him.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n

\u201cChildren don\u2019t come with a f \u2013 \u2013 king instruction manual,\u201d the lyricist told GQ.\u00a0\u201cFour sisters; I\u2019m the only boy. Maybe she didn\u2019t know what to do with me.\u201d<\/p>\n

Their relationship, fraught with physical and emotional torment, was strained even further when a judge ruled that his mother was \u201cincapable\u201d of caring for him.\u00a0<\/p>\n

By 10, Simmons had been expelled from school for fighting and throwing chairs at teachers and was arrested twice for arson and assault.\u00a0Hard time behind bars would become a recurring trend in his life. <\/p>\n

He was ultimately ordered into the rehabilitative custody of the Julia Dyckman Andrus Memorial children\u2019s home in Yonkers \u2014 which was about 20 minutes away from the one-bedroom apartment he shared with his mom and sisters \u2014 for an 18-month stay.\u00a0<\/p>\n

But he reportedly was\u00a0kicked out of the facility for allegedly starting a fire <\/a>with his roommate, according to the 2011 music and faith fusion tome \u201cHip-Hop\u00a0Redemption: Finding God in the\u00a0Rhythm and the Rhyme.\u201d\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n

Once returned to his mother\u2019s home, he would often run away to escape her abuse and rotating door of unsympathetic boyfriends. He would sleep in Salvation Army clothing bins and befriend mangy stray dogs. (Despite their problematic past, Simmons and his mother have since made amends.)<\/p>\n

And at age 14, a man he trusted \u2014 who was twice his age \u2014 gave him his first taste of drugs.\u00a0<\/p>\n

\u201cHe passed the [marijuana] blunt around<\/a> and \u2026 I hit the blunt,\u201d the emcee tearfully revealed to fellow musician Talib Kweli on the \u201cPeople\u2019s Party\u201d podcast in November 2020.\u00a0<\/p>\n

\u201cI\u00a0never felt like this before. It f \u2013 \u2013 ked me up. I later found out that he laced the blunt with crack \u2026\u00a0Why would you do that to a child?\u201d Simmons questioned during the emotional interview.\u00a0<\/p>\n

\u201cHe was, like, 30, and he knew I looked up to him. Why would you do that to someone who looks up to you?\u201d<\/p>\n

Simmons further lamented over the life-altering deception via the song \u201cPain,\u201d in which he says: \u201cI smoked crack at 14 for the first time \/ Given to me by a n \u2013 \u2013 \u2013 a that I idolized \/ My love is real, but after that, what I saw in his eyes \/ Was a snake, and who I loved was just a disguise.\u201d<\/p>\n

The harrowing incident would sound the starting pistol to Simmons\u2019 lifelong battle with substance abuse. <\/p>\n

But shedding light on his dark traumas in public has helped the gruff, growling megastar cope with the anguish of his childhood.\u00a0<\/p>\n

\u201cLetting some of this stuff out [has helped],\u201d he told Kweli. \u201cI really didn\u2019t have anyone to talk to about it because [growing up] in the hood, nobody wants to hear that.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cNobody even wants to help with talking,\u201d he added, noting that expressing your feelings was viewed as a sign of weakness in his community.\u00a0<\/p>\n
