Onlookers would stare into a webcam and then see a reflection on their face of something that inspires them. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p2\"><span class=\"s1\">At least, that was the plan. I think there\u2019s something like eight PhDs in the film. But they also had an identity that was marginalized.\u00a0<span class=\"s1\">They were women, they were people of color, they were LGBTQ, they were religious minorities. I think having that identity that was marginalized enabled them to shine a light into biases that Silicon Valley missed.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Global_concerns\"><\/span>Global concerns<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">While the majority of\u00a0<em>Coded Bias<\/em><\/span>\u00a0is set in the US, the film\u00a0traverses across three continents. In London \u2014\u00a0<a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.comparitech.com\/vpn-privacy\/the-worlds-most-surveilled-cities\/\">reportedly<\/a> the world\u2019s most surveilled city outside\u00a0China\u00a0\u2014 a Black teenager in his school uniform is stopped by police officers due to a facial recognition match.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">He\u2019s searched, fingerprinted, and his details are checked. It\u2019s another false match.<\/span><span class=\"s1\"\/><\/p>\n<p>Police use of facial recognition is expanding at an alarming rate in the UK, but at least we can witness some of it on film.\u00a0Kantayya says this wouldn\u2019t have been possible in her home country:<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">The US is essentially a lawless country when it comes to data protection. It is a wild wild west. There were some scenes in the film, like the police trial of facial recognition in London, where I literally would not have been able to cover that as a journalist in the US, because there were no laws in place that would make that process transparent to me.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p class=\"p1\">Kantayya wants the US to put a pause on facial recognition, and pass\u00a0data protection regulation laws that resemble the EU\u2019s GDPR. She views facial recognition and the credit initiative as complementary technologies, \u201cbecause your face represents the state of your credit.\u201d<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>We can choose to immediately trust someone based on their credit score,<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span>instead of relying on only my own senses to figure it out. This saves me time from having to get to know a person.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p class=\"p2\"><span class=\"s1\">Kantayya says the scene shocks viewers in\u00a0democracies. But is the situation in the\u00a0US much\u00a0better? Futurist Amy Webb isn\u2019t convinced.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p2\">\u201cThe key difference between the United States and China, is that China is transparent about it,\u201d she says in the film.<\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Sci-fi_meets_reality\"><\/span>Sci-fi meets reality<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Kantayya is an avid sci-fi fan, and the genre has a strong influence on <em>Coded Bias<\/em>.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">The film opens with an animated embodiment of AI speaking ominously about its love for humans.\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"s1\">It\u2019s the real\u00a0voice of Tay, an infamous\u00a0Microsoft\u00a0chatbot. Tay was pulled from Twitter within hours of its launch\u00a0after trolls\u00a0trained it to spout racist, misogynistic, and anti-Semitic invective. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Around half of <em>Coded Bias<\/em> uses real tran<a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/download-scripts-themes-apps\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"9\" title=\"Download Scripts &amp; Themes &amp; Apps\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">script<\/a>s from Tay. But its speech\u00a0later morphs into a written screenplay narrated by an actor.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p2\"><span class=\"s1\">Kantayya said the AI narrator was inspired by the character of HAL in\u00a0Stanley Kubrick\u2019s <em>2001: A Space Odyssey<\/em>.\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"s1\"><span>She also uses clips from\u00a0<\/span><em>Minority Report<\/em><span>\u00a0and <em>The Terminator<\/em> to\u00a0<\/span><span>draw parallels between representations of AI in sci-fi and reality.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p class=\"p2\">The visual language of <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/sciencee\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"5\" title=\"Science\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">science<\/a> fiction really informed the way that I communicated the themes in <em>Coded Bias<\/em>. Kantayya hopes this helps reshape our visions of the future:\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p class=\"p2\"><span class=\"s1\">I really believe that we\u2019ve had a stunning lack of imagination around these technologies, because both science fiction and AI developers are predominantly white and predominantly male. <\/span><span class=\"s1\">It\u2019s my hope that by centering the voices of women and people of color in the technologies that are shaping the future, we\u2019ll unleash a new kind of imagination about how these systems could be used and deployed.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>She also wants the\u00a0film\u00a0to raise the public\u2019s understanding of AI. Ultimately, we should all\u00a0push for policies that protect people from algorithmic injustices.<\/p>\n<p>As\u00a0Kantayya puts it,\u00a0\u201cData rights are the unfinished business of the civil rights movement.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><em>Coded Bias was released on Netflix on April 5.
