“#Sasheer Zamata discusses her new ABC sitcom ‘Home Economics’<\/strong>”<\/p>\n

\u201cHome Economics\u201d co-star Sasheer Zamata said the realism of her new ABC sitcom hit close to home.<\/p>\n

\u201cThere aren\u2019t too many family shows that talk about money, which is kind of surprising,\u201d Zamata, 34, told The Post. \u201cWhat do you do when a family member loans you money? I\u2019ve also had money situations with different members of my family \u2014 and I can definitely relate to how that\u2019s portrayed in the show.<\/p>\n

\u201cThere\u2019s a lot involved with that.\u201d<\/p>\n

There is \u2014 and that\u2019s the premise of \u201cHome Economics,\u201d airing Wednesdays (8:30 p.m.) The ensemble comedy revolves around the three closely knit Hayworth siblings \u2014 Sarah (Caitlin McGee), Tom (Topher Grace) and Connor (Jimmy Tatro) \u2014 who are at different levels of the socio-economic scale. Connor, the youngest, is a dim private equity multi-millionaire with a broken marriage; Tom, a best-selling author, is married-with-kids to ex-lawyer Marina (Karla Souza) and has money problems; and older sister Caitlin, who\u2019s married to schoolteacher Denise (Zamata), has just been fired from her job and is worried how they\u2019ll support themselves and their two children.<\/p>\n

The sitcom was inspired by the life of Michael Colton, who co-created the series<\/a> with John Aboud.<\/p>\n

\u201cDenise is more of an outside observer of the craziness of the Hayworths; Marina and Denise married into this family and it\u2019s quite a lot to witness,\u201d said Zamata, an actress\/comedia<\/a>n who spent four seasons on \u201cSaturday Night Live\u201d and whose resume includes roles on \u201cWoke,\u201d \u201cThe Last OG\u201d and Syfy\u2019s \u201cThe Pole.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cDenise is very earthy and energetic and is a spirited woman, which is not much different from me. She\u2019s into astrology and crystals and the moon but is also practical \u2014 she\u2019s there to calm Sarah down and make sure she keeps a level head regarding her brothers.<\/p>\n

\u201cShe\u2019s kind of Sarah\u2019s rock, in that way.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cHome Economics\u201d marks Zamata\u2019s first co-starring role in a network sitcom.<\/p>\n

\u201cThere\u2019s a little more heart to this show, and you definitely have moments of real connections between these character and also jokes and it\u2019s very funny,\u201d she said. \u201cThere are moments that are really varied in emotion and, because the nexus of the show is money, that can be awkward to talk about \u2014 with a significant other, siblings, parents, children\u2026I think that can lead us to different places [in the series].\u201d<\/p>\n

Denise will also throw in a few surprises as the series progresses, she said. (Seven episodes have been shot so far.) <\/p>\n

\u201cThere\u2019s a fun storyline where she actually gets more involved with Connor\u2019s job. You\u2019d think she would reject that \u2014 not wanting to get involved because it\u2019s \u2018blood money\u2019 or not a socially good thing on the surface \u2014 but she really gets into it and uses her \u2018woo woo\u2019 ways to connect on a real level.\u201d<\/p>\n

Zamata, who was auditioning for roles in other series before landing \u201cHome Economics,\u201d said that Denise offered a different perspective.<\/p>\n

\u201cI don\u2019t think I auditioned for any other characters that were this crunchy-granola, to say the least,\u201d she said. \u201cI like that she\u2019s sweet, but I also like that she\u2019s realistic and not just a blindly positive person. She can also can bring people down to earth and bring herself down to earth as well. <\/p>\n

\u201cI like the way she fits with this family, even in her relationship with Sarah, who\u2019s very pragmatic and also kind of crunchy-granola but she gets much angrier at the world than [Denise]. We create a nice balance with each other \u2014 yes, Sarah is right a lot of the time but Denise can bring her into this world of \u2018We don\u2019t have to run everyone over because they\u2019re wrong. We can also use love to get what we want.\u2019<\/p>\n

\u201cThat\u2019s a nice dynamic to see within this larger family.\u201d\n <\/p><\/div>\n
