A Broadway actor who almost lost his sight in a brutal random attack at a Manhattan subway station is celebrating his recovery \u2014 by returning to the spotlight.<\/p>\n

After undergoing successful eye surgery, Alex Weisman, 33, hit the small screen Tuesday app<\/a>earing in NBC\u2019s medical drama \u201cNew Amsterdam,\u201d just under five months after the injury.<\/p>\n

The role, coincidentally, involved a medical trauma of its own: Weisman played a Superman character in Times Square who gets hit by a bus.<\/p>\n

\u201cI was filming a story about healthcare workers in the midst of the pandemic,\u201d Weisman told The Post. \u201cI got to celebrate people who work in hospitals, which was fitting.\u201d<\/p>\n

Weisman, who was also an original cast member of Broadway\u2019s \u201cHarry Potter and The Cursed Child,\u201d has kept a positive outlook since being sucker punched by a stranger last November.<\/p>\n

The suspect behind the battering at the 103rd<\/sup> Street station on the Upper West Side was never found, Weisman said. But he refuses to dwell on that dark day: \u201cThat person has nothing to do with my life.\u201d<\/p>\n

Weisman acknowledged that, as an actor, his face is his livelihood. In the days following the attack he felt worried he might never work in the business again.<\/p>\n

But doctors at New York Eye and Ear Infirmary of Mount Sinai <\/a>worked swiftly to repair the damage. <\/p>\n

\u201cThey were quick and efficient,\u201d he said. \u201cThey understood the nuance of my situation and that I needed my face to work in the theater.\u201d<\/p>\n

One of them, retina surgeon Dr. Gareth Lema, told The Post that the patient\u2019s injury was severe. However, he added that he was fortunate because the retinal tear had not detached from the center of his vision.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe decided on a minimally invasive procedure where we basically lasered the retina and walled off the part that was detached,\u201d said the expert.<\/p>\n

The redness was kept to a minimum allowing Weisman to submit his audition tape for \u201cNew Amsterdam\u201d just two weeks after the shocking assault, which occurred when the man approached him out of the blue.<\/p>\n

\u201cMy agent sent me the audition and was like, \u2018No pressure,\u2019 but I knew it was important to get on camera and see what I looked like,\u201d recalled the actor, whose previous film roles include appearances in 2018\u2019s \u201cAn Acceptable Loss\u201d and 2020\u2019s \u201cBlack Box.\u201d <\/p>\n

\u201cI sent it over with an apology, saying, \u2018I\u2019m so sorry if I look terrible, let me know.\u2019<\/p>\n

\u201cAnd they were like: \u2018Shut up. It\u2019s fine. You\u2019re great.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n

After nailing the audition, filming took place over three-and-a-half weeks in January when, on his days off, he\u2019d visit the real hospital for constant check-ups on his eye.<\/p>\n

\u201cI have a tiny blind spot, some floaters and some glare when looking at screens,\u201d he said. \u201cBut I count myself lucky.\u201d<\/p>\n

Now that his career is up and running again, he\u2019s keen to secure more roles both on TV and Broadway \u2014 and he\u2019s not alone in that excitement. The theater world is set to at least partially re-open after Labor Day in September 2021 after going dark in March 2020.<\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019m hopeful,\u201d Weisman said. \u201cSince the age of 7, I don\u2019t think I have gone for two weeks without seeing a play or being in one.<\/p>\n

As for riding the subway, the attack hasn\u2019t put him off one iota \u2014 despite a rise in the number of random assaults taking place in New York.<\/p>\n
