The extra money will serve to incentivize new and existing drivers to accept more rides.<\/p>\n<p>As the coronavirus pandemic hit, Uber use fell through the floor, and many drivers left the platform. As a result, users have been left waiting hours for drivers to accept a ride, and the <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.ft.com\/content\/2b71e009-bb96-46ee-b024-4c574ef41988\">Financial Times<\/a> suggests its likely that drivers have now found new jobs.<\/p>\n<p>Now that people are using the platform again, drivers are earning more than they did in pre-corona years. The stimulus package will serve to place a few extra cherries on top of this pay bump.<\/p>\n<p>However, as <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/article\/us-uber-lyft-driver-pay-idUSKBN2BU2AN\">Reuters<\/a> points out, the uptick in earnings won\u2019t last forever. Over time, Uber says, earnings will return to normal.<\/p>\n<p>Over the past year, Uber and other gig-work reliant businesses, have fought legislators around the world over how their drivers are classified under employment law.<\/p>\n<p>In the US, Uber, Lyft, and DoorDash put more than $100 million into a campaign to fight AB5 legislation that was seeking to classify drivers as workers. It would have forced the gig-economy firms to pay their drivers various benefits and securities.<\/p>\n<p>The companies fought AB5 for one very simple reason: it wouldn\u2019t be able to afford a business model in which drivers are treated like employees.<\/p>\n<p>While Uber, in the West, has been spending money to avoid paying its drivers benefits and good working wages, it has used incentives like this before in India to ruinous effects.<\/p>\n<p>When the ride-hailing firm expanded into India, it offered very generous incentives which encouraged drivers to buy new cars to meet the platforms\u2019 standards. However, <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/m.dailyhunt.in\/news\/india\/english\/financial+chronicle-epaper-finance\/ola+uber+drivers+sell+their+cabs+as+incentives+dry+up-newsid-71061181\">many were left deeply distressed<\/a> as incentives dried up, demand decreased, and they were <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.livemint.com\/Opinion\/J2qKzzEsUnoMrvqxPN7Z8I\/Uber-should-worry-about-the-distressed-debt-behind-Indian-ex.html\">unable to repay loans<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>With that in mind, Uber\u2019s $250 million stimulus package seems like a bold move. As the <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.ft.com\/content\/2b71e009-bb96-46ee-b024-4c574ef41988\">FT<\/a> points out, the one thing Dara Khosrowshahi \u2014 Uber\u2019s CEO \u2014 is worried about this year, is supply, so I doubt this will be the company\u2019s last move on this matter.<\/p>\n<p>While the stimulus might get drivers engaged in the short term, as ever, unless Uber addresses working conditions it\u2019s unlikely to keep its drivers engaged in the long term.<\/p>\n<hr\/>\n<p><i><span>Do EVs excite your electrons?
