Start spreading the news<\/a>: The townhouse that formerly belonged to the late CBS anchor Walter Cronkite has hit the market for $7.7 million.\u00a0 <\/p>\n

The sellers, Joseph Faccibene and Mary Kay Coyle, bought the home at 519 E. 84th St., between York and East End avenues, in 1999. <\/p>\n

Cronkite\u2019s fan mail was still delivered to the home years after he left, including books that fans hoped \u201cthe most trusted man in America\u201d would autograph. <\/p>\n

Once, when Cronkite\u2019s wife Betsy left her wallet at Patsy\u2019s, the waiter rang Faccibene\u2019s doorbell the next day to drop it off.\u00a0(Faccibene tried to deliver it to the Cronkites\u2019 home, but the doorman wouldn\u2019t accept it, so they called CBS. Eventually, Cronkite called and asked if he could stop by with his wife, pick it up and visit the home.) <\/p>\n

\u201cHe had come to New York to start a new concept, the evening news, and said he had a hard time finding a place to live,\u201d Faccibene told The Post. <\/p>\n

Cronkite, added Faccibene, bought the house for $40,000 when there was still a squatter there. <\/p>\n

\u201cThe house held a lot of memories for them,\u201d Faccibene said. \u201cThey raised their family here and entertained lots of famous people, like Frank Sinatra.\u201d<\/p>\n

The 19th-century, four-story brownstone, which dates to 1880, features four bedrooms, custom millwork and hardwood floors. There\u2019s also an eat-in chef\u2019s kitchen and French doors that lead to a landscaped garden with bluestone pavers and a gas-line grill. <\/p>\n

The full-floor parlor features gas-burning fireplaces, a formal living room, a dining room and a family room with three Juliet balconies overlooking the garden. The main bedroom \u2014 on the third floor \u2014 comes with a fireplace, a Juliet balcony, two dressing rooms and a spa-like bathroom. <\/p>\n

When Cronkite lived there, he\u2019d commute to CBS by carpool until one day his neighbor, advertising mogul David Ogilvy, offered him a lift in his green Rolls-Royce. (He had the account at the time.) \u00a0<\/p>\n

\u201cAfter that, he\u2019d wait at the window and hitch a ride every morning,\u201d Faccibene said. \u00a0 <\/p>\n
