Queer as Folk will return to the U.S. with a “vibrant reimagining” of Russel T. Davies’ hit British series, it has been announced.

Peacock placed a straight-to-series order on Thursday for a new series that will focus on a diverse group of friends in New Orleans.

Their lives are changed dramatically in the aftermath of a tragedy.

Stephen Dunn (Little America) is on board as creator, writer, and executive producer.

What’s more, Dunn will also direct several episodes of the new series.

As for Davies, he will be heavily involved in the project, taking an Executive Producer credit.

Channel 4 aired the original Queer as Folk in the UK. It lasted 10 episodes and was subsequently remade for U.S. audiences on Showtime.

It had a five-year run from 2000-2005, concluding after five seasons.

The cast included Michelle Clunie, Robert Gant ,Thea Gill, Gale Harold, Randy Harrison, Scott Lowell, Peter Paige, Hal Sparks, and Sharon Gless.

“Queer as Folk was more than just a show, it was a ground-breaking and necessary voice for so many people,” declared NBC Universal’s head of scripted content Lisa Katz in a statement.

“Stephen’s new version for Peacock arrives at yet another pivotal moment in our culture.”

Added Dunn: “It is a surreal honour to adapt the notoriously groundbreaking series by Russell T. Davies. When the show originally aired, the idea of unapologetic queer stories on TV was so provocative that I felt I could only watch Queer as Folk in secret.”

“But so much has changed in the last 20 years and how wonderful would it be if the next generation didn’t have to watch Queer as Folk alone in their dank basements with the sound muted, but with their family and friends and the volume cranked all the way to the max.”

Talk of a Queer as Folk reboot first emerged in 2018, when it was announced that Bravo was working on an update of the series.
