Anne Beatts, an original writer for \u201cSaturday Night Live\u201d and creator of the sitcom \u201cSquare Pegs,\u201d has died at age 74. <\/p>\n

Beatts died at her West Hollywood home on Wednesday, longtime friend Rona Edwards confirmed to Variety<\/a>. <\/p>\n

The comic was one of the first \u2014 and few \u2014 female writers on staff as \u201cSNL\u201d launched in 1975. Beatts was behind many classic sketches like \u201cTodd and Lisa Loopner\u201d and \u201cMale Prostitute.\u201d She was also the first female contributing editor for the National Lampoon magazine. <\/p>\n

\u201cI remember once at \u2018Saturday Night Live\u2019 having spent the night in my office. There was a heavy snowfall overnight, and I looked out the window onto Fifth Avenue and I saw that the entire street was covered with pristine fresh snow,\u201d Beatts told the Television Academy<\/a> in 2009. \u201cI just felt very joyful and I thought the 8-year-old me always wanted to stay in the city \u2014 when you would be going to FAO Schwarz and the Museum of Natural History \u2014 and I was always like, \u2018Someday I\u2019m not going to leave.\u2019 I thought if someone had said to that 8-year-old, \u2018Well, yes you will do this, you will have this moment,\u2019 I would have been just thrilled.\u201d <\/p>\n

In 1976, Beatts and \u201cSNL\u201d took home an Emmy for Outstanding Writing in a Comedy-Variety or Music Series<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Beatts broke off from the sketch show in 1982 to launch her own sitcom, \u201cSquare Pegs,\u201d based on her own adolescent experience. Though it only ran for one season, it served as the launchpad for Sarah Jessica Parker\u2019s career, who was only 17 years old when she helmed the show. At Beatt\u2019s choosing, according to Vulture<\/a>, the show\u2019s writing staff was comprised of five women and only one man \u2014 a gender balance that\u2019s still considered a rarity in the industry. <\/p>\n

In 1995, Beatts became the showrunner for \u201cThe Stephanie Miller Show.\u201d<\/p>\n

Later in life, Beatts worked at Chapman University\u2019s Dodge College of Film and Media<\/a> Arts as an instructor. <\/p>\n
