“#WB’s Initial BvS Script<\/a> Featured Batman Branding Lex Luthor \u2013 \/Film<\/strong>”<\/p>\n

Zack Snyder\u2019s 2016 superhero film Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice<\/em> was, famously, pretty dark. But according to writer Chris Terrio<\/strong>, the studio\u2019s original draft was way darker: Ben Affleck\u2019s Batman brands criminals in both versions, but Warner Bros.\u2019 original draft actually ended with Batman branding Lex Luthor (Jesse Eisenberg<\/strong>).<\/p>\n

In a new interview, Terrio defends his scripts for both Batman v Superman<\/em> and Justice League<\/em>, specifically saying that the theatrical cut of Justice League<\/em> \u201cdoesn\u2019t represent [his] work\u201d and that he wanted to take his name off the movie after he saw Joss Whedon\u2019s rewrites.

After Man of Steel<\/em> came out in 2013, David Goyer (Batman Begins<\/em>, Man of Steel<\/em>) was hired to write the script for Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice<\/em>. He eventually left the project due to scheduling conflicts, and Terrio was brought in to help with the tone of Affleck\u2019s Batman character. Now, in a fascinating interview with Vanity Fair<\/a>, Terrio is pushing back against the narrative that he\u2019s the one who made the film as dark and gritty as it is.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe studio seemed to take this position after\u00a0BvS<\/em>\u00a0that\u00a0my<\/em>\u00a0writing was too dark\u00a0and that this was their problem,\u201d Terrio told the outlet. \u201cBut what they didn\u2019t mention was that, for example, in the draft of the Batman\/Superman script that W.B. had developed\u2014[which was] the draft I was\u00a0handed when I\u00a0joined the project\u2014Batman was not only branding criminals with a bat brand, he also\u00a0ended<\/em>\u00a0the movie by branding Lex Luthor.\u00a0That ending was a point over which I explicitly went to the mat with the studio again and again.\u00a0I argued that Batman cannot end the movie continuing this behavior, which amounted to torture, because then the movie was endorsing what he did.\u201d<\/p>\n

The entire interview is absolutely worth reading, but I wanted to highlight one more section which illustrates just how much WB was struggling to create a cohesive narrative behind the scenes. Terrio says \u201cthere was never any thought to how the world was constructed before they issued this edict\u201d about the order of releases for the DC movies<\/a>. \u201cThey said, \u2018Conform to this schedule.’\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cThe\u00a0Wonder Woman<\/em>\u00a0script wasn\u2019t even finished when I wrote\u00a0Justice League<\/em>,\u201d Terrio explained.\u00a0\u201cSo I had no basis to write Wonder Woman other than Batman\/Superman. Themyscira didn\u2019t even exist. I was never shown anything on the page for it. I didn\u2019t know whether people could talk underwater. That was a thing that I had to ask, because I didn\u2019t know if I could do underwater scenes with Aquaman and Atlanteans. It was all just from scratch because there had been no [solo] character films.\u00a0So\u00a0Justice League<\/em>\u00a0needed to establish three of the characters; it had to create a long game<\/a> mythology for the DC Universe. It had to resurrect Superman because he was dead at the end of the last movie. I just don\u2019t know how you could do all that in under two hours [as the studio mandated]. Maybe the 2017 release proved that you couldn\u2019t.\u201d<\/p>\n
