What\u2019s the deal with the surge of wasps every spring?<\/p>\n<h2 role=\"heading\" aria-level=\"2\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Whats_the_Deal_with_Spring_Wasps\"><\/span>What\u2019s the Deal with Spring Wasps?<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>If it\u2019s not around mid-spring where you live and there are a huge number of wasps buzzing about your home or property, the likely culprit is a wasp nest you haven\u2019t yet located. Spend a little time walking around your home looking for a visible nest or an opening\u2014such as a crack in the soffit or gap beneath some flashing\u2014where the wasps are clearly entering and exiting. Instead of a steady flow of wasp traffic to and from a given point on your home or in a nearby tree, there is a sort of Walking Dead-like aimless zombie t<a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/download-scripts-themes-apps\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"9\" title=\"Download Scripts &amp; Themes &amp; Apps\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">app<\/a>ing going on. You might notice more than one wasp outside your home at a time, but they aren\u2019t together. You\u2019ll also find more wasps making their way into your home\u2014this time of year is prime time for finding a wasp or two bumbling around up near the ceiling.<\/p>\n<p>So, what\u2019s the deal? Why so many lone-wolf wasps just tap-tap-tapping around? You\u2019re not seeing the worker drones of a hive out working\u2014because wasp colonies die out every year and the worker drones aren\u2019t even around yet to bother you. What you\u2019re seeing is last year\u2019s queens out on scouting missions.<\/p>\n<p>Every fall, paper wasp queens mate and then seek out a snug location to overwinter\u2014such as a tree cavity, under a log, or even tucked away in your garage. Come spring, typically once temperatures are consistently around 50F or so, they wake up en masse and head out looking for a spot to build a new nest.<\/p>\n<p>That\u2019s where the slow-moving tap-tapping behavior comes into play. They might look like they\u2019re drunkenly meandering around but in reality, they\u2019re carefully exploring the structure of your home looking for somewhere that would be an ideal spot to build a nest.<\/p>\n<h2 role=\"heading\" aria-level=\"2\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"What_Should_You_Do_About_the_Wasps\"><\/span>What Should You Do About the Wasps?<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>For the most part, the curious queens are harmless. Most of them aren\u2019t going to build a nest on your property, despite the seemingly constant attention. They\u2019ll sting, but only if antagonized. Rather than go out of your way to exterminate the random paper wasp queens that are just bumbling around your neighborhood, it\u2019s a much better use of your energy to check your home and outbuildings for the start of new nests and places where the wasps might gain access.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Look for gaps in your trim work, soffits, behind the fascia board. Anywhere the wasp can gain access to an interior cavity they will explore. Properly affix any loose pieces of exterior detailing on your home or caulk over gaps to keep insects out.<\/li>\n<li>Check all openings, such as crawl space vents and attic vents for intact screening. If the screening is missing or damaged, replace it.<\/li>\n<li>While you\u2019re at it, check the actual window screens. Even if there are no visible holes, it\u2019s possible that the screen is cocked slightly in the frame and the wasps are sneaking through the small gap.<\/li>\n<li>Look for the start of nests. Each paper wasp nest starts with a little stem attached to some part of the structure and is built out from there. In the early stages, paper wasp nests look like a little paper mache daisy head. If you remove the little \u201cdaisy\u201d early on and kill the queen, you\u2019ll save yourself the headache of dealing with hundreds of wasps later.<\/li>\n<li>Continue to check your home throughout the spring, any starter nests you missed will continue to grow and be easier to identify as the season progresses.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Although wasps have an unpleasant sting and certainly none of us want a wasp nest right outside our front door or in the playset our children use, paper wasps are actually useful to have around (especially for gardeners).
