\n Here’s how Maclean\u2019s picked the best communities in Canada to live and work remotely\n <\/div>\n
\n The idea behind <\/span>Maclean\u2019s<\/span><\/i> Best Communities ranking is that while there are many intangible things that determine quality of life that can\u2019t be quantified and measured, a lot of tangible things can be. In our inaugural edition of the ranking, we gathered data on 415 communities across the country and compared them based on categories we thought would be most important to the average person. Then the pandemic hit, and people\u2019s priorities changed.<\/span><\/p>\n

Our revamped ranking assumes remote work is here to stay, asking where people should move if they\u2019re not tied to an office and a commute. We eliminated categories assessing the local economy, since remote workers won\u2019t have to look for a nearby job, and added a category assessing internet quality. We also streamlined some categories. For example, we eliminated rent data in the affordability category, since rents and property prices are closely correlated and it\u2019s safe to assume a community with high housing prices will also have expensive rents.<\/span><\/p>\n

Environics Analytics was an invaluable partner, providing a significant amount of data about each community that can\u2019t be found anywhere else. And the Canadian Internet Registration Authority provided us with data from its <\/span>Internet Performance Test Program<\/span><\/a> that\u2019s never been shared with the public before.<\/span><\/p>\n

We make categories we think are most important to average people worth the most points. Different things are important to different people, of course, and we invite you to adjust our category weightings and find the city that\u2019s perfect for you using our build-your-own-ranking tool.<\/span><\/p>\n

What we refer to as \u201ccommunities\u201d are \u201ccensus subdivisions\u201d in Statistics Canada\u2019s terminology. Census subdivision boundaries are usually the same as municipal boundaries. General<\/a>ly, what we call a \u201ccommunity\u201d is a town or city with its own mayor. Except in the case of communities with duplicate names, we use the official Statistics Canada terminology for these communities, which might sometimes be different from what locals call them.<\/span><\/p>\n
