She\u2019s nominated for Best Original Song for \u201cHear My Voice\u201d \u2014 from Best Picture contender \u201cThe Trial of the Chicago 7\u201d \u2014 at the Academy Awards on April 25.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s still quite far-fetched,\u201d Celeste Waite, 26, told The Post. \u201cI just felt like I was the most unlikely candidate to be nominated for such a thing.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Really, though, Celeste should be getting used to accolades. She co-wrote the torchy tune with Daniel Pemberton, who composed the score for \u201cThe Trial of the Chicago 7,\u201d a real-life drama about a group of anti-Vietnam War activists who stood trial for conspiring to incite riots at the 1968 Democratic National Convention.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe story is really what drew me to want to be involved in the project,\u201d said Celeste. \u201cI just thought it was such an important story to be told.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>But for her, the message of the song was a more personal one: \u201cIt was more about taking a stand to align myself with anybody that has something that they believe in that feels like they aren\u2019t heard. If you believe in it enough, and you fight for it enough, eventually, you will find justice.\u201d<\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" width=\"682\" height=\"1024\" alt=\"Singer Celeste on the red carpet\" class=\"wp-image-17794402 lazyload\" srcset=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2021\/04\/celeste-2.jpg?quality=90&amp;strip=all&amp;w=300 300w, https:\/\/nypost.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2021\/04\/celeste-2.jpg?quality=90&amp;strip=all&amp;w=640 640w, https:\/\/nypost.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2021\/04\/celeste-2.jpg?quality=90&amp;strip=all&amp;w=1280 1280w, https:\/\/nypost.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2021\/04\/celeste-2.jpg?quality=90&amp;strip=all&amp;w=682 682w, https:\/\/nypost.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2021\/04\/celeste-2.jpg?quality=90&amp;strip=all&amp;w=1333 1333w\" data-sizes=\"(max-width: 640px) 100vw, 682px\"\/><figcaption>Celeste is up for three Brit Awards next month, including album of the year for \u201cNot Your Muse.\u201d<\/figcaption><figcaption><span class=\"credit\">Anthony Harvey\/Shutterstock<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>On Oscar night, Celeste will also be rooting for a certain Best Supporting Actor nominee from \u201cJudas and the Black Messiah.\u201d \u201cI actually watched that last night, and I really loved <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/pagesix.com\/2021\/04\/04\/daniel-kaluuya-rips-the-royal-family-his-in-snl-debut\/?_ga=2.176970469.1732749365.1617806913-1620225911.1606143209\">Daniel Kaluuya<\/a>,\u201d she said. \u201cHe actually used one of my songs for a short film that he made [called \u2018Two Single Beds\u2019].\u201d<\/p>\n<p>And she\u2019ll be pulling for \u201cSoul,\u201d too, because she collaborated with jazz pianist Jon Batiste on a remake of the Impressions\u2019 \u201cIt\u2019s All Right\u201d for the animated movie\u2019s soundtrack. \u201cI just said yes straight away . . . knowing that <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/pagesix.com\/2021\/03\/14\/jon-batiste-talks-grammys-and-keeping-social-justice-alive-on-new-album\/?_ga=2.106799555.1902001951.1617900001-1831761407.1566409713\">Jon Batiste<\/a> can produce something far more extraordinary than the norm,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<p>As for the muses for her own album, they ranged from Bill Withers and Roberta Flack to Solange and Ghanaian-American singer-songwriter Moses Sumney. \u201cAnd Edith Piaf as well,\u201d said Celeste. \u201cShe\u2019s one of my favorite singers.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Growing up in Brighton, England, Celeste \u2014 who is of British and Jamaican descent \u2014 discovered classic jazz and R&amp;B singers such as Dinah Washington, Aretha Franklin and Sarah Vaughan at a young age. Even now, sometimes I have easier conversations with people that are, like, 80 years old than people that are my own age.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Currently, Celeste is part of a wave of English soul women \u2014 including fellow Brit Award nominees Lianne La Havas and newcomer Arlo Parks \u2014 who are making their voices heard. \u201cThe people that are sort of, like, on the pedestal in the UK for soul and jazz music are not always women of color,\u201d she said, \u201cand they are the beginning of it all.
