“#DMX Has Died at 50<\/strong>”<\/p>\n

DMX\u00a0has died, as a representative for his family tells Pitchfork. The rapp<\/a>er was hospitalized on April 2 after suffering an apparent drug overdose and subsequent heart attack at his home in White Plains, New York. He was 50 years old. DMX\u2019s family issued the following statement via the press representative:<\/p>\n

We are deeply saddened to announce today that our loved one, DMX, birth name of Earl Simmons, passed away at 50-years-old at White Plains Hospital with his family by his side after being placed on life support for the past few days. Earl was a warrior who fought till the very end. He loved his family with all of his heart and we cherish the times we spent with him. Earl\u2019s music inspired countless fans across the world and his iconic legacy will live on forever. We appreciate all of the love and support during this incredibly difficult time. Please respect our privacy as we grieve the loss of our brother, father, uncle and the man the world knew as DMX. We will share information about his memorial service once details are finalized.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/blockquote>\n

Born Earl Simmons in Baltimore, Maryland, DMX spent much of his early life in Yonkers, New York. He experienced a turbulent childhood, growing up in an abusive household and spending time in boys\u2019 homes and, later, juvenile institutions. It was during his time at one of those boys\u2019 homes that he started writing music, eventually linking up with producer Ready Ron.<\/p>\n

DMX\u2019s signature raspy growl\u2014partially caused by a lifelong struggle with bronchial asthma\u2014made his songs instantly recognizable. He broke into the wider music industry at large after The Source<\/em> featured him in its \u201cUnsigned Hype\u201d column. The following year, he signed to Columbia\u2019s Ruffhouse imprint, though he was dropped after a pair of singles. After some years of promo tracks and guest spots, he was signed to Def Jam, setting him up for his breakout projects: It’s Dark and Hell Is Hot<\/em>\u00a0and Flesh of My Flesh, Blood of My Blood<\/em>, both of which arrived in 1998.<\/p>\n

His 1999 album\u00a0…And Then There Was X<\/em> went multi-platinum off the success of the singles \u201cParty Up\u201d and \u201cWhat\u2019s My Name.\u201d In addition to his slew of hits, DMX also became a film star, appearing in\u00a0Romeo Must Die<\/em> (alongside Aaliyah), Exit Wounds<\/em>,\u00a0Cradle 2 the Grave<\/em>, and more. His last album\u00a0Undisputed<\/em> was issued in 2012. He released his most recent single \u201cBain Iz Back\u201d at the beginning of 2017.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

DMX was open about his struggles with addiction, as well as the time he spent incarcerated. In 2018, he was sentenced to a year in prison for tax evasion. Following his release in early 2019, the rapper re-signed with Def Jam and was readying an album with multiple high profile features. In September of that year, he told GQ<\/em><\/a> that he didn\u2019t have any reservations about making new music. \u201cThe standard that I hold myself to is the same: Better than everything I hear<\/em>,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

Months after a landmark VERZUZ appearance with Snoop Dogg, DMX spoke with rapper Talib Kweli in an emotional late 2020 interview<\/a> on the latter\u2019s podcast, People\u2019s Party With Talib Kweli.<\/em> He claimed that Ready Ron prompted a crack cocaine addiction after passing him a laced blunt at age 14. \u201cWhy would you do this to a child,\u201d he remembered asking. \u201cHe knew I looked up to him. Why would you do that to someone who looked up to you?\u201d<\/p>\n

In the same interview, DMX discussed his long battle with addiction. \u201cDrugs were a symptom of a bigger problem,\u201d he told Kweli. \u201cThere were things that I went through in my childhood where I just blocked it out\u2014but there\u2019s only so much you can block out before you run out of space,\u201d he said. \u201cI really didn\u2019t have anybody to talk to about it. So often talking about your problems is viewed as a sign of weakness. When it\u2019s actually one of the bravest things you can do.\u201d<\/p>\n
