“#DOE not tracking remote kids learning from out of town<\/strong>”<\/p>\n

The Department of Education isn\u2019t tracking how many remote learners are living out of town \u2014 and one city official wants answers.<\/p>\n

Arguing that they shouldn\u2019t occupy spots in DOE schools, Queens City Councilman Robert Holden asked City Hall for an accounting of the issue this week.<\/p>\n

Holden said the practice is \u201cmore prevalent\u201d than is general<\/a>ly acknowledged in a letter to Mayor Bill de Blasio this week.<\/p>\n

\u201cPlease inform\u00a0the public about the mechanisms in place to confirm that students who opted for remote learning are still residents of New York City and the school district\u00a0they are claiming,\u201d Holden wrote.<\/p>\n

A spokesman for Holden said that coveted seats in his district \u2013 including Gifted & Talented programs \u2014 should go to those who have remained in the boroughs.<\/p>\n

\u201cThat\u2019s not fair to students or their parents who live in New York City,\u201d said Kevin Ryan. \u201cThey\u2019re taking up spots that are needed by other students.\u201d<\/p>\n

Teachers across the city said that many kids who log into their remote classes each day are often nowhere near New York City.<\/p>\n

But with some remote learning options likely to continue next year, Ryan said the DOE should get a better handle on the issue.<\/p>\n

\u201cOur position is that this needs to be looked at and enforced by the start of next school year,\u201d he asserted.<\/p>\n

A DOE spokesperson said the agency is being flexible with families given the difficulties posed by the coronavirus<\/p>\n

\u201cWe recognize that the challenges of the pandemic may have temporarily changed circumstances for our families, and enrollment is based on a family\u2019s permanent residence,\u201d she said. \u201cWe are delivering strong virtual instruction to those who have chosen to learn remotely this school year and will continue to update school registers as necessary.\u201d\n <\/p><\/div>\n
