\n Chip Kelly\u2019s attempt to address the George Floyd tragedy did not go over well with some of his former players.<\/p>\n

The UCLA head coach posted a message on Twitter<\/a> through the school\u2019s account on Monday, saying \u201cThe past few days have been very difficult. It\u2019s hard to see our community \u2014 and humanity \u2014 so deeply hurting.\u201d<\/p>\n

He went on to use a quote from Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.: \u201c\u2018It is not enough for people to be angry,\u2019 Dr. King said in 1968. \u201cThe supreme task is to organize and unite people so that their anger becomes a transforming force.\u2019\u2019\u2019<\/p>\n

Kelly finished with, \u201cWe must unite, it is our only hope, and the first steps must be taken now.\u201d<\/p>\n

Stephen Johnson III, a wide receiver who played for Kelly in 2018 and left the program with a year remaining of eligibility, was not impressed by the vagueness of the statement.<\/p>\n

\u201cWhat does this mean?\u201d Johnson wrote in reply to the message.<\/p>\n

Ex-UCLA linebacker, Breland Brandt, who was last played in 2017 due to concussions, responded to Johnson\u2019s tweet and said Kelly \u201cdismantled an entire class of athletes (majority black) and thought it\u2019d be a good idea to copy and paste some sympathy.\u201d<\/p>\n

Johnson agreed.<\/p>\n

\u201cExactly. Let\u2019s let the truth be known [that] he threw away classes of black [athletes] careers and did not care.\u201d<\/p>\n

And Bolu Olorunfunmi, a running back whose UCLA career also ended due to concussions in 2018, went after Kelly, as well, for using a quotation from King rather than writing something himself.<\/p>\n

\u201cBut what are YOU going to do???,\u201dOlorunfunmi wrote. \u201cHow is UCLA gonna be different and take that first step you are talking about?? Can\u2019t ride the quotes of MLK forever. I [want to] hear YOUR true take.\u201d<\/p>\n

Olorunfunmi added Kelly wasn\u2019t alone: \u201cAll these NCAA programs with white men at the face of it have the lives of so many minority young men behind it need to do MORE! I\u2019m sorry MLK tweets don\u2019t cut it! In a time like this those young men look for guidance! I know I never got it. That\u2019s step 1: CARE\u2026REAL CARE.\u201d<\/p>\n

But not all of Kelly\u2019s old players were upset with his take.<\/p>\n

Elvis Akpla played for Kelly at Oregon and the former wide receiver replied to a story in the Los Angeles Times defending his one-time coach.<\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019m not going to hear this toxic garbage. Chip has done so much for so many players.\u201d<\/p>\n

Former Oregon linebacker Tyson Coleman noted the players who criticized Kelly did not have success playing for him.<\/p>\n

\u201cDo not let these scrubs try and defame this man. I have seen what happ<\/a>ens when guys don\u2019t get the playing time they think they deserve. Chip wants to WIN over ANYTHING\u2026 I\u2019m not saying he\u2019s the best role model etc but I\u2019d look into this one.\u201d<\/p>\n

Kelly has been a polarizing figure for much of his career, especially after leaving Oregon for the NFL.<\/p>\n

Earlier this week, DeSean Jackson told NBC Sports he signed with the Redskins in 2014 after being released by Kelly and the Eagles in part because he wanted to stay in the NFC East so he would face Kelly more often.<\/p>\n

\u201cI just wanted to go play against y\u2019all twice a year,\u2019\u2019 Jackson said. \u201cI\u2019m staying in the division because I want them to see me twice a year.\u201d\n <\/p><\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/div>\n
