Everything to know about the economic boycott<\/strong>&#8221;<\/p>\n<div id=\"article-wrapper\" role=\"main\">\n<div>\n<div>\n<p>        July 7, 2020 <span>|<\/span> 10:33am             <span>|<\/span> Updated <span>July 7, 2020 | 11:05am<\/span><\/p>\n<div>\n                        Tuesday has been declared Blackout Day, a campaign calling on black Americans to spend their dollars exclusively at black-owned businesses.<\/p>\n<p>Activist and <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/social-mediaa\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"1\" title=\"Social Media\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">YouTube<\/a>r Calvin Martyr founded the initiative, compelled by the death of Georgia man Ahmaud Arbery, who was chased down by three white men, then shot and killed. Martyr has been spreading the hashtag #BLACKOUTDAY2020.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhere do we go after countless decades and centuries of oppression, of being killed, of being lynched, of being burned alive \u2026 persecuted for how we look?\u201d says the Texas-based Martyr on May 8, while holding up a copy of Martin Luther King, Jr.\u2019s book \u201cWhere Do We Go From Here: Chaos or Community.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe only way as a people that we will get any change is if we unite solidarity with the dollar,\u201d he says. \u201cI guarantee you, if for one day in America not one black person spent a dollar \u2026 we can unite like they did in Montgomery, Alabama, when not one single black person rode a bus. That right there is what caused Civil Rights legislation to come, because they touched them pockets.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><span><iframe loading=\"lazy\" allowfullscreen=\"true\" height=\"360\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/BnwXFqamVGA?version=3&#038;rel=1&#038;fs=1&#038;autohide=2&#038;showsearch=0&#038;showinfo=1&#038;iv_load_policy=1&#038;wmode=transparent\" title=\"Video\" width=\"640\"><\/iframe><\/span><\/p>\n<p>The trend to boost black-owned businesses has gained support on social media over the past few months \u2014 sparked by the nationwide Black Lives Matter protests as well as the economic plunge caused by the coronavirus pandemic, which has devastated the country\u2019s most vulnerable populations, particularly Black people.<\/p>\n<p>Husband and wife Tayo Giwa and Cynthia Gordy Giwa run the website BlackOwnedBrooklyn.com, which is dedicated to promoting all kinds of small businesses founded by black people. They wrote in a June 1 post on Instagram, \u201cWe hope to be a space where you feel seen, affirmed and rejuvenated. Where our cultures, history and everyday lives are worthy of examination and reverence. And where our self-determination and collective power are celebrated on the regular.\u201d<br \/><\/br><br \/>\n\u2800<br \/><\/br><br \/>\nThey added, \u201cWe\u2019ve seen a huge burst of new followers over the past few days seeking to support Black communities at this time. Welcome\u2026 We\u2019re proud to be a useful resource, as our aim here is to be actionable.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The dining <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/download-scripts-themes-apps\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"9\" title=\"Download Scripts &amp; Themes &amp; Apps\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">app<\/a> EatOkra is also dedicated to revealing black-owned restaurants. They\u2019re also asking users who value the service to pledge support through a crowdfunding campaign to ensure the app continues.<\/p>\n<p>In a pitch video on the EatOkra website, co-founder Janique Edwards says, \u201cI don\u2019t think you can talk about black spaces without talking about how necessary they are \u2026 It\u2019s important for these spaces to exist \u2014 not just because of who they represent, but what they represent.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>And small, black-owned businesses need support, as studies show they are far more likely to experience financial instability and difficulty obtaining credit compared to businesses owned by white people. A 2017 report from the Federal Reserve Bank found that less than half \u2014 42% \u2014 of black-owned businesses in 2016 actually profited in 2016, compared to 57% of their white counterparts. Meanwhile, black-owned businesses saw a credit approval rating at a 19%\u00a0 lower rate than white ones, despite the fact that they also obtained credit at rates that were 10% higher.<\/p>\n<p>At the same time, black Americans have significant buying power, spending approximately $3.5 billion per day, according to Nielsen data from 2018.<\/p>\n<p>In his call to action, Martyr also says, \u201cIf we could do it for one day, it would shut the whole system down.
