\u201cThe Resident\u201d co-star Malcolm-Jamal Warner almost had a much shorter stint on the hit Fox medical drama.\u00a0<\/p>\n

\u201cWhen I auditioned for [my character] AJ, it was just for the last three episodes of Season 1. And then here we are filming the end of Season 4. So it\u2019s been a pretty good journey,\u201d Warner, 50, told The Post.\u00a0<\/p>\n

\u201cThe Resident\u201d returns for its Season 4 spring premiere Tuesday (April 13) at 8 p.m. The series<\/a> follows the lives and jobs of staffers at Chastain Park Memorial Hospital, including chief resident Dr. Conrad Hawkins (Matt Czuchry,<\/a> \u201cGilmore Girls,\u201d); nurse practitioner, and Conrad\u2019s wife, Nic Nevin (Emily VanCamp); second-year resident internist Devon Pravesh (Manish Dayal); surgical resident Mina Okafor (Shaunette Ren\u00e9e Wilson); and AJ \u201cThe Raptor\u201d Austin (Warner), a brilliant, sometimes volatile cardiothoracic surgeon who\u2019s dating Mina.\u00a0<\/p>\n

\u201cAJ\u2019s parents show up again and there are some health issues that we\u2019re dealing with in terms of aging parents,\u201d Warner said about the remainder of the season.\u00a0<\/p>\n

\u201cAnd then, of course, there\u2019s the relationship with Mina that everyone is enjoying. There\u2019s definitely the ups and downs in their love, which is always fun for us to play. I think it would be fair to say that [Shaunette Ren\u00e9e Wilson] and I are each other\u2019s favorite parts about working on the show. They give us such great stuff to do together. We\u2019ve been having a ball since Day One.\u201d<\/p>\n

Warner, who\u2019s also a poet, a Grammy-winning musician<\/a> and a relatively new dad (to a 3-year-old daughter) attributed AJ \u2018s expanded role on \u201cThe Resident\u201d to his vibrant personality.\u00a0<\/p>\n

\u201cI think once they saw the character come to life, they\u2019re like, \u2018Oh, we\u2019ve got to keep this,\u2019\u201d he said. \u201cI wanted to audition for AJ because he seemed like such a dynamic, complex, layered character \u2014 quite different from the type of roles that I general<\/a>ly get cast in. After all of these years, I feel like I\u2019m finally getting the handle on my craft that I\u2019ve been chasing since \u2018Cosby.\u2019 So this has been a really wonderful experience for me.\u201d<\/p>\n

Warner, who\u2019s app<\/a>eared on series including \u201cSuits,\u201d \u201cSons of Anarchy,\u201d \u201cGirlfriends\u2019 Guide to Divorce\u201d and \u201cAmerican Crime Story,\u201d is best-known for his Emmy-winning role as Theo Huxtable on NBC\u2019s \u201cThe Cosby Show\u201d (1984-1992). In the wake of Bill Cosby\u2019s sex assault conviction<\/a>, the series now has a complicated legacy, which Jamal-Warner acknowledged.<\/p>\n

\u201cI can understand why some people can\u2019t watch the show and enjoy it because of everything that\u2019s going on now,\u201d said Warner. \u201cBut I think\u2026there\u2019s a generation of young people who have pursued higher education or have started loving families because of the influence of that show. So it\u2019s kind of like, you can\u2019t discount its impact on television culture and American culture.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n

While other actors who begin their careers with a hit show burn out or fade into obscurity, Warner has been working steadily since he first began playing Theo.\u00a0<\/p>\n

\u201cMy mother was very instrumental in getting me to understand that at some point, [\u2018The Cosby Show\u2019] was going to be over,\u201d he said. \u201cSo I planted seeds early on. I was directing because I knew the transition from being seen as a child actor to being taken seriously\u2026might not be a smooth one. I think a lot of times, it\u2019s easy to get caught up in the success of a hit TV show or a hot song out or a hot film out. But that\u2019s only half the battle. <\/p>\n

\u201cThe real work is being able to maintain and sustain that career. So the biggest thing I can attribute it to is just always having my sights set on [the fact] that this is a marathon and not a sprint.\u201d\u00a0\n <\/p><\/div>\n
