Open floor plans are out; dedicated spaces for remote work and learning are in. Yards are being transformed into entertainment spaces and walls are being repainted. At the same time, increased demand and safety concerns can make the remodeling process much longer than before.<\/p>\n<div class=\"paywall\">\n       Here are five trends to watch for this 2021 home-remodeling season.<\/p>\n<h6><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"1_A_focus_on_dedicated_spaces\"><\/span><strong>1. A focus on dedicated spaces<\/strong><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h6>\n<p>At the start of 2020, \u201cthe most requested design concept was open space,\u201d says Jimmy Dollman, principal of Dollman Construction in Roanoke, Virginia. \u201cBut now, we face a different set of design implications because everyone\u2019s living conditions have changed.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Dollman notes that remote workers and learners need privacy and quiet. \u201cA year ago, it was rare for one family member to work from home,\u201d he says. \u201cNow, [parents] and kids find it difficult to get work done because of the noise in the open design.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>This year, expect to see homeowners spending less time knocking down walls to open up shared areas, and more time transforming spare rooms or nooks into dedicated spaces. Making room for home offices<\/strong><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h6>\n<p>To add\u00a0<a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nerdwallet.com\/article\/loans\/personal-loans\/build-home-office?utm_campaign=ct_prod&amp;utm_content=976940&amp;utm_medium=wire&amp;utm_source=syndication&amp;utm_term=anne-stanleymarketwatch-com\" class=\"icon none\">home offices<\/a>\u00a0to residences, \u201chomeowners aren\u2019t adding square footage,\u201d says Doug King, owner of King Contracting, a design-build firm in St. Petersburg, Florida, and president of the National Association of the Remodeling Industry. \u201cRather, they\u2019re taking out rarely used closets, like in the hallway, and moving interior walls to make space.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><strong>See: <\/strong>To improve your productivity, paint your office this color (it\u2019s scientifically proven)<\/p>\n<p>The home office trend isn\u2019t going away anytime soon, he notes.<\/p>\n<div id=\"cx-membership-tile\"><\/div>\n<p>\u201cEven when the pandemic is over,\u201d King says, \u201cthere\u2019ll be a lot of people still working from home.\u201d He notes that because of this trend, use of home <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/technology\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"4\" title=\"Technology\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">technology<\/a> is also increasing as households install items such as ethernet cables for computer networks and Bluetooth speakers.<\/p>\n<h6><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"3_More_outdoor_living\"><\/span><strong>3. More outdoor living<\/strong><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h6>\n<p>One cure for that cooped-up feeling is outdoor living areas.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cPeople want their backyards to be their oasis,\u201d King says. In his area, he says\u00a0<a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nerdwallet.com\/article\/mortgages\/inground-pool-cost?utm_campaign=ct_prod&amp;utm_content=976940&amp;utm_medium=wire&amp;utm_source=syndication&amp;utm_term=anne-stanleymarketwatch-com\" class=\"icon none\">pools<\/a>\u00a0are the No. 1 thing being added to backyards. Outdoor kitchens and fire pits are the next most popular.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Don\u2019t miss:<\/strong> Mortgage rates have skyrocketed in recent months \u2014 adding $33,000 on average to a 30-year loan<\/p>\n<p>Homeowners spending more time at home may also start to seek out remodeling projects that bring beautiful outdoor views inside \u2014 for instance, by installing larger windows or glass doors that let in more natural light.<\/p>\n<h6><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"4_Longer_wait_times\"><\/span><strong>4. Longer wait times<\/strong><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h6>\n<p>Besides shifts in design trends, homeowners can expect a continued slow-down in the industry. In some cases, safety concerns have changed how contractors and workers <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/download-scripts-themes-apps\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"9\" title=\"Download Scripts &amp; Themes &amp; Apps\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">app<\/a>roach projects. For example, Dollman has suspended all work in occupied residences to avoid exposure to COVID-19 \u201cto protect the homeowners and our crews,\u201d he says.<\/p>\n<p>Getting permits can also take much longer than usual as demand increases and those who approve the permits adapt to new working conditions \u2014 for instance, working at home rather than in the office, or working with a limited staff.<\/p>\n<h6><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"5_Bold_colors\"><\/span><strong>5. Bold colors<\/strong><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h6>\n<p>For homebound do-it-yourselfers looking for affordable ways to make rooms more welcoming this year, adding a colorful fresh coat of paint will likely be high on their list.<\/p>\n<p>A sign that bold colors and color combinations could be gaining favor: They featured prominently among Color of the Year winners for 2021 announced by brands including Sherwin Williams, Pantone and Benjamin Moore.
