The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Science<\/a>s has not been doing the right thing by Rosie Perez.\u00a0<\/p>\n

In an interview with Variety<\/a> this week, the actress revealed that she has not been invited back to Hollywood\u2019s biggest night \u2014 the Oscars \u2014 since 1994, despite belonging to the organization.\u00a0<\/p>\n

\u201cNot even to sit in the audience, not to present, nothing \u2014 and I\u2019m a member,\u201d she told the publication. \u201cI love the Academy Awards. I cheer on my peers, but it hurts. It\u2019s like when your home team doesn\u2019t ask you to come back into the stadium after you got up to bat and hit the home run.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n

Her one time attending the Oscars wasn\u2019t even as a guest, but as a nominee, for her performance as the grief-stricken survivor of a plane crash in the 1993 Peter Weir film \u201cFearless.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n

Not being invited to the event in the intervening 26 years is one of many ways Perez, 56, feels that she has been refused a seat at Hollywood\u2019s table, despite her impressive career. The most significant of those ways has been a constant uphill battle against industry members\u2019 racism.\u00a0<\/p>\n

\n

\u2018Yes, change is happ<\/a>ening, but it\u2019s too damn slow.\u2019<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<\/figure>\n

\u201cThe biggest struggle has been navigating through other people\u2019s shortcomings,\u201d said Perez, who is Puerto Rican. \u201cOther people\u2019s bigotry, racism \u2014 and specifically the ones that don\u2019t understand that they are bigots or racists.\u201d<\/p>\n

Recently, Hollywood has made an effort to diversify and better represent ethnic groups \u2014 but Perez finds the progress painstaking to watch.\u00a0<\/p>\n

\u201cYes, change is happening, but it\u2019s too damn slow,\u201d she said.\u00a0<\/p>\n

At least in her latest role on HBO Max\u2019s \u201cThe Flight Attendant\u201d she didn\u2019t have to demand makeup appropriate for her skin tone or pants that actually fit her body.\u00a0<\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019m a full-figured woman and proud of it. In the past, I would have to ask, \u2018Why can\u2019t I get different pants that are going to fit my big f\u2013king ass?\u2019 \u201d she said.\u00a0<\/p>\n

The Academy did not immedia<\/a>tely return a request for comment.\u00a0<\/p>\n

The 2021 Oscars will air Sunday, April 25, on ABC.\n <\/p><\/div>\n
