\n A French bus driver was savagely beaten by a group of passengers who refused to wear face masks \u2014 an attack that left him brain dead, according to reports.<\/p>\n

Philippe Monguillot, 58, confronted the passengers who were not complying with a rule that requires face mask on public transportation when they boarded without tickets around 7 p.m. Sunday in Bayonne, French outlet Le Parisien reported.<\/p>\n

\u201cThey just assumed they could all get on and do what they want, but the driver had to do his job,\u201d a law enforcement source told the Daily Mail reported.<\/p>\n

He was dragged off the bus onto the platform, where he was kicked and beaten by the group before they escaped, according to the reports.<\/p>\n

\u201cWhen he stood up to them, a very unpleasant argument developed, and voices were raised, and then the driver was attacked when everybody spilled out on to the bus platform,\u201d the source told the outlet.<\/p>\n

Monguillot was left unconscious and brought to the hospital, where he was determined to be brain dead, Le Parisien reported.<\/p>\n

His wife, Veronique, said the couple\u2019s lives have been \u201cdestroyed\u201d by the violent attack.<\/p>\n

\u201cHe can\u2019t leave us like this, he was going to be 59 years old soon,\u201d she told Le Parisien. \u201cNo, you don\u2019t do this over a bus ticket. You don\u2019t kill for free like this.\u201d<\/p>\n

Five people face charges in connection to the grisly assault, but their identities haven\u2019t been released, the outlet reported.<\/p>\n

Bayonne\u2019s Mayor Claude Olive condemned the attack as \u201cbarbaric\u201d and said the city was working to improve safety for bus drivers.<\/p>\n
