“#Yankees’ Aaron Judge’s return to lineup doesn’t erase his ‘injury’ situation<\/strong>”<\/p>\n

ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. \u2014 Aaron Judge was back in the lineup and in right field for the Yankees on Saturday against the Rays after missing the previous two game<\/a>s with soreness in his left side.<\/p>\n

But there\u2019s still not much clarity on Judge\u2019s \u201cinjury\u201d situation.<\/p>\n

After Judge had a hit and two strikeouts in a 4-0 loss at Tropicana Field, manager Aaron Boone said the right fielder seemed OK.<\/p>\n

Judge, who had last played Tuesday, sat out Wednesday\u2019s game, before the Yankees off-day Thursday.<\/p>\n

Asked what told him Judge was ready to return, Boone said, \u201cHim.\u201d<\/p>\n

Despite Judge\u2019s return, Boone said the Yankees will \u201cclosely monitor him. \u2026 We\u2019ll certainly monitor how he\u2019s moving.\u201d<\/p>\n

If Judge doesn\u2019t report any problems, Boone said he expects him to start again Sunday.
Still, there remained no answer to what happ<\/a>ened to Judge in the first place.<\/p>\n

\u201cI think it was a gradual kind of workload,\u201d Boone said. \u201cProbably swinging a lot, doing a lot of cage work, that led to some soreness that developed over time.\u201d<\/p>\n

And which came less than a week into the regular season.<\/p>\n

Boone said Judge wanted to play Friday, but the manager wanted to be cautious with the injury-prone slugger, who has had rib and oblique issues in the past. The Yankees have still not specified exactly what Judge has been dealing with. When he also missed the final three games of spring training, the team said the first two were rest days and the third was because he was dealing with allergies.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s always good to write his name in there,\u2019\u2019 Boone said. \u201cWe\u2019re just trying to be cautious with him early [in the season], not wanting this to become something that becomes an issue. Hopefully we\u2019re able to get past that.\u201d<\/p>\n

Judge homered in each of his previous two games, but didn\u2019t appear comfortable on the bases or in the field on Wednesday.<\/p>\n

Jay Bruce batted ninth for the first time in his career Saturday and went 0-for-3, extending his slump to 3-for-27. He is hitless in 14 straight at-bats.<\/p>\n

\u201cIn the first three or four games he had a lot of good at-bats,\u2019\u2019 Boone said. \u201cThe last couple games he\u2019s struggled a bit. That\u2019s gonna happen throughout the season. He\u2019s been a little bit off.\u201d<\/p>\n

As for how Bruce is playing at first base, Boone said: \u201cI think he\u2019s done a lot of good things there,\u201d but needs more time at the spot for plays to become \u201csecond nature\u201d to him. There\u2019s still room for growth there.\u201d<\/p>\n

Gio Urshela said he felt \u201cway better\u201d after spending Friday on the COVID-19 injured list following an adverse reaction to the Johnson & Johnson vaccine left him feeling \u201ca little weak\u201d Thursday and Friday.<\/p>\n
