Heartland watch: Union Backed Biden, Lost Jobs<\/strong><\/p>\n

The App<\/a>vion Inc. paper mill plant in Roaring Spring, Pa., closed for good this month, leaving 293 workers jobless and marking \u201cthe first significant manufacturing loss in this state since President Joe Biden took office,\u201d Saleno Zito laments at American Greatness<\/a>. Of those handed pink slips, 250 belonged to the United Steelworkers, which backed Biden in 2020. \u201cBiden\u2019s vocal support of unions . . . has done little to stem the loss of blue-collar jobs in America.\u201d The United Auto Workers also endorsed Biden but last week could only \u201cblast\u201d Ford\u2019s plan to build new vehicles in Mexico instead of Ohio. Workers resent relentless lockdowns, which Biden supports, as well as \u201cclimate-change demands from the Biden administration\u201d that would kill manufacturing.<\/p>\n

From the right: End the \u2018Race Theory\u2019 Gimmicks<\/strong><\/p>\n

Critical race theory is \u201creverse racism,\u201d as it blames whites and Western culture \u201cfor academic disparities among racial minorities,\u201d argues Auguste Meyrat at The Federalist<\/a>. It\u2019s a popular \u201cgimmick\u201d in public schools looking for \u201ca quick and easy solution\u201d to complex problems. Yet CRT\u2019s \u201cblatantly political\u201d agenda raises \u201cthe already totalitarian nature of public school districts to a new level,\u201d threatening to silence teachers who reject it as \u201cuntrue or unhelpful.\u201d Competition through school choice is the only way to stop teachers from using CRT as an excuse to \u201cavoid hard work\u201d and \u201cdemand nothing from themselves or their students.\u201d For the sake of children and teachers \u201cwho want to do good work, it\u2019s time for Americans to flip this dynamic and stop the gimmicks once and for all.\u201d<\/p>\n

COVID journal: The Texas Disaster That Wasn\u2019t<\/strong><\/p>\n

President Biden called Texas Gov. Greg Abbott\u2019s decision to lift his state mask mandate \u201cNeanderthal thinking,\u201d recalls Drew Holden at National Review<\/a>. California Gov. Gavin News<\/a>om called it \u201creckless.\u201d To 2020 presidential wannabe Beto O\u2019Rourke, it was \u201ca death warrant.\u201d Media<\/a> coverage was brutal, too. Yet in the month since then, \u201csomething odd happened: The number of new coronavirus cases and deaths went down\u201d in Texas. Its seven-day new-case average is less than half what it was when the policy was announced. Meanwhile, other states, like New York and Michigan, \u201care experiencing major spikes.\u201d Texas\u2019 experience should engender \u201ca spirit of humility \u2014 a recognition that, just maybe, we don\u2019t have all the answers.\u201d<\/p>\n

Centrist: Refund the Police<\/strong><\/p>\n

\u201cCan we agree that, as long as we\u2019re funding more of everything, we\u2019re going to also refund the police?\u201d asks Noah Millman at The Week<\/a>. He\u2019s happy to see \u201cmore support for families, more housing, more jobs, more and cleaner electricity,\u201d but since last summer\u2019s protests that made the \u201cdefund\u201d slogan huge, \u201cit has become apparent that America\u2019s decades-long trend of declining crime has decisively reversed\u201d \u2014 and the turn began \u201cin the mid-2010s, before either the pandemic or the George Floyd protests.\u201d After all, \u201ccrime is bad\u201d and often \u201ca driver of inequality.\u201d Plus, \u201cfailing to address rising crime fuels distrust in government.\u201d Note, too: \u201cHiring more police is consistently popular, including in black communities that also voice concerns about police abuse.\u201d<\/p>\n

Budget hawk: How To Cut Infrastructure Costs<\/strong><\/p>\n

President Biden\u2019s $2 trillion American Jobs Plan includes $85 billion for mass transit and $80 billion for Amtrak and freight rail, but, observes Connor Harris at City Journal<\/a>, \u201cthe poor state of American infrastructure\u201d isn\u2019t because of insufficient spending but \u201cfailed cost control \u2014 a problem Biden\u2019s proposal won\u2019t solve.\u201d Projects in cities like New York and Boston have \u201ccost several times\u201d those elsewhere \u201con a per-mile basis.\u201d Washington enables the \u201cbloat\u201d by heavily subsidizing projects; locals see the subsidies as \u201cfree money\u201d and don\u2019t \u201cworry about efficient construction.\u201d Meanwhile, Biden\u2019s plan shows \u201ca lack of interest in cost control,\u201d requiring, for example, all materials to be US-made, which inflates costs. Better to \u201cturn off the spigots.\u201d Greater \u201clocal responsibility may force local managers finally\u201d to get serious about cost-cutting.<\/p>\n
