“#Buttigieg dismisses ‘semantic debate’ over infrastructure bill<\/strong>”<\/p>\n

US Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg on Sunday dismissed the \u201csemantic debate\u201d over President Biden\u2019s multi-trillion dollar infrastructure plan \u2014 amid criticism that it pushes the boundaries of what could be considered \u201cinfrastructure.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cThis package, both in terms of the individual parts and as a whole, enjoy enormous support from the people, including Republicans,\u201d Buttigieg said CNN\u2019s \u201cState of the Union.\u201d<\/p>\n

The bill includes funds for services such as long-term care, broadband, research and development \u2014 components that Republicans say don\u2019t fall under the umbrella of \u201cinfrastructure.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cSo, here in Washington folks are getting into this semantic debate. I very much believe that all of these things are infrastructure because infrastructure is the foundation that allows us to go about our lives but if there are some Republicans who don\u2019t agree with that, we can agree to disagree,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt makes no sense to say \u2018I would have been for broadband, I\u2019m now against it because it\u2019s not a bridge. I would have been for eldercare, but I\u2019m against it because it\u2019s not a highway.\u201d<\/p>\n

He argued that the plan has the support of a \u201cmajority of the American people.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cSo they can call it whatever they like, but we\u2019re asking them to support it because it\u2019s good policy,\u201d he said of Republicans who have expressed opposition to the bill.<\/p>\n

Biden also defended expanding the definition of infrastructure last week, saying that the idea \u201chas always evolved to meet the aspirations of the American people and their needs. And it is evolving again today.\u201d<\/p>\n
