{"id":224798,"date":"2021-04-12T00:10:28","date_gmt":"2021-04-11T21:10:28","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/en.buradabiliyorum.com\/anti-poverty-group-flunks-pols-for-blocking-harlem-charter-school\/"},"modified":"2021-04-12T00:10:28","modified_gmt":"2021-04-11T21:10:28","slug":"anti-poverty-group-flunks-pols-for-blocking-harlem-charter-school","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/anti-poverty-group-flunks-pols-for-blocking-harlem-charter-school\/","title":{"rendered":"#Anti-poverty group flunks pols for blocking Harlem charter school"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>&#8220;<strong>#Anti-poverty group flunks pols for blocking Harlem charter school<\/strong>&#8221;<\/p>\n<div>\n<p>The head of New York City\u2019s oldest children\u2019s anti-poverty group accused state lawmakers of hurting poor Harlem kids by blocking the opening of a new charter school in the neighborhood \u2014 calling their inaction \u201ccriminal.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Founded in 1812, the <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.missionsociety.org\/\">Harlem-based Mission Society<\/a> received preliminary state <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/download-scripts-themes-apps\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"9\" title=\"Download Scripts &amp; Themes &amp; Apps\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">app<\/a>roval to open a charter school in its headquarters at Malcolm X. Blvd. and 142nd Street \u2014 the original site of the prohibition-era Cotton Club.<\/p>\n<p>But the planned Minisink charter school can\u2019t open because New York has hit the cap to open more charter schools, and lawmakers rejected pleas to allow an expansion as part of the recently passed state budget.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s a crying shame that we couldn\u2019t get anywhere in Albany to authorize more charter schools. We don\u2019t have a slot. We ran up against the cap,\u201d said Mission Society CEO Elsie McCabe-Thompson.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt is a crushing loss for the Harlem community. Parents, minority parents, do like charter schools. There was no one who would stand up for us. It\u2019s something parents talk about on a daily basis. We need good schools. We\u2019re not going to stop fighting and pushing for a great education for our children.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She said she was attracted to the planned school when she heard there would be small classes, as low as 12 per teacher.<\/p>\n<p>Onijala said New York City leaders last year were consumed with responding to the COVID-19 outbreak, but now must plan for the future \u2014 including wooing parents to stay in the city.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou have to look ahead. You have to look at the big picture beyond COVID,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe need good schools. I advocated for it. They wouldn\u2019t do it,\u201d said of the Democratic-run Assembly.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cParents should have an option. A lot of families have kids in charter schools.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She said other lawmakers object to charter schools because most of the staffers are non-union, unlike traditional public schools that are unionized. The United Federation of Teachers opposes charter schools, which are privately managed but publicly funded and compete for students.<\/p>\n<p>Assembly Education Committee Chairman Michael Benedetto (D-Bronx) said last week that union opposition is certainly a factor in putting a halt to charter school expansion. Andrew Cuomo sought a much more modest proposal: reauthorizing 20 so-called \u201czombie\u201d licenses \u2014 those surrendered by schools that closed \u2014 to new charter school applicants.<\/p>\n<p>But lawmakers rejected even that minor change to allow planned charter schools like the Mission Society\u2019s Minisink to open.<\/p>\n<p>Charter schools typically have a longer school day and school year and students often perform better on the state\u2019s standardize math and English exams than kids in traditional public schools.\n            <\/p><\/div>\n<blockquote><p><strong><span style=\"color: #ff6600;\">If you liked the article, do not forget to share it with your friends.
