Despite flirting with the genre at the beginning of his career with 2004\u2019s\u00a0Shaun of the Dead<\/em>,\u00a0Edgar Wright<\/strong> has never made a full-fledged horror film. But that\u2019s all going to change when his highly anticipated psychological thriller\u00a0Last Night in Soho<\/strong><\/em>\u00a0<\/em>hits theaters next year.<\/p>\n

Wright has been hailed for his singular grasp on visual comedy and sleek action filmmaking, but psychological horror is something that he hasn\u2019t really dipped his toes in. Which is why\u00a0Last Night in Soho<\/em> will \u201cfeel very different\u201d from his past films, Wright teased in a new interview. While the filmmaker remained tight-lipped on details for the film, which features a star-studded cast led by\u00a0Anya Taylor-Joy<\/strong> and takes place in both\u00a01960s and contemporary London, Wright did have plenty new things to tease about the distinctive\u00a0Last Night in Soho<\/em> tone.<\/p>\n

In a new interview with Empire, Wright teased a little of what to expect from\u00a0Last Night in Soho.<\/em> Namely, a film like none he\u2019s ever made before:<\/p>\n

\n

\u201cIt will feel very different to my other films. But I\u2019ve always liked films which have a slow burn into something else, and a lot of my movies<\/a> have that feeling. Last Night starts in a more psychological realm and then starts to get increasingly intense as it goes along. And I always like to gravitate towards making a film in genres I miss, and there\u2019s a certain type of psychological horror film that you got more in the \u201960s and \u201970s that have something of an operatic nature. I\u2019m using that kind of visual grammar.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n

While Wright broke out with the horror comedy\u00a0Shaun of the Dead<\/em>, and impressed with a fake trailer for\u00a0Grindhouse<\/em>, the filmmaker is mostly known for his stylish comedies like\u00a0Hot Fuzz<\/em>\u00a0or rhythmic action films like\u00a0Baby Driver<\/em>. But, as many comedia<\/a>ns-turned-horror-filmmakers have said, comedy and horror are two sides of the same coin \u2014 both are about timing.<\/p>\n

Speaking of timing, the film\u2019s two timelines are the only other hint we have about this mysterious film, which reportedly\u00a0takes place in both 1960s London and modern day. Wright had\u00a0previously teased\u00a0that the film taps into his \u201cnostalgia for a decade I didn\u2019t live in.\u201d<\/p>\n

Last Night in Soho<\/em> will hit theaters on\u00a0April\u00a0<\/strong>23, 2021\u00a0<\/em><\/strong>after being delayed several times due to the coronavirus pandemic.<\/p>\n
