“#51K more NYC students enroll in classroom learning<\/strong>”<\/p>\n

Roughly 51,000 Big App<\/a>le kids switched from remote to blended learning during a Department of Education opt-in period this month, according to the agency. <\/p>\n

That brings the total number of city students participating in classroom activity to 365,000, according to the DOE.<\/p>\n

There are roughly 960,000 kids in the system and the vast majority will remain on a remote-only basis for the rest of the school year.<\/p>\n

All of the new blended learning kids will be absorbed into their schools on April 26.<\/p>\n

Mayor de Blasio said at his daily briefing Monday that elementary schools will be allowed to lower social<\/a> distancing restrictions from 6 feet to 3 feet while higher grades will stick with the current format.<\/p>\n

Citing shifting CDC guidance and an easing of COVID-19 indicators, critics have been pushing for a wider reopening of city schools in recent months.<\/p>\n

City officials also said Monday that 28 percent of all teachers currently have medical exemptions that allow them to work from home for the remainder of the year.<\/p>\n

Schools Chancellor Meisha Ross-Porter said Monday that the DOE will likely \u201creset\u201d coronavirus accommodations before the start of the next academic year, meaning teachers won\u2019t automatically have those exemptions.\n <\/p><\/div>\n
