If you\u2019re a fan of Netflix<\/strong>\u2019s regency-era romance, then you were probably disapp<\/a>ointed to hear that Reg\u00e9-Jean Page<\/strong>, AKA the Duke of Hastings, wouldn\u2019t be returning for season two. Let\u2019s be real, his brooding, smoldering Simon Basset was a BIG part of the enormous success of the series<\/a>, so fans were understandably upset.<\/p>\n

But the actor told Variety<\/em> he was only ever contracted for one season, and following the path of the books that the show is based on, the next season will focus on Anthony Bridgerton (Jonathan Bailey<\/strong>) rather than Simon and his bride Daphne (Phoebe Dynevor<\/strong>). So it made sense that the British star wouldn\u2019t be returning.<\/p>\n

However, a source for Page Six<\/em> insinuated that wasn\u2019t the whole story. They shared:<\/p>\n

\u201cReg\u00e9 is not coming back to Bridgerton<\/em> because of creative differences with [executive producer] Shonda Rhimes<\/strong> and her team. \u2026 He wasn\u2019t happy with what was planned for his character for Season 2, which would have kept him a player but not the focal point of the show.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n

The insider added:<\/p>\n

\u201cReg\u00e9 has been inundated with offers for other interesting and challenging leading roles.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n

TBH, we can\u2019t blame him for not wanting to take a backseat to a Bridgerton<\/em> brother in the next season. When your name is being tossed in the ring for James Bond, why settle for a side player? And for the record, it seems like this is more about artistic integrity than salary, because the For the People<\/em> alum allegedly turned down a big payday for a cameo in the upcoming episodes.<\/p>\n

While all this sounds like it could have been a tense situation behind the scenes, the source assured that the 31-year-old is leaving on \u201cgood terms.\u201d But they noted:<\/p>\n

\u201cIf you look at all the big names who have left [Rhimes\u2019 hit show] Grey\u2019s Anatomy<\/em> in the past, you see you don\u2019t disagree with Shonda, nobody is bigger than the show.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n

Well, he might not be bigger<\/em> than the show, but he certainly was one of the biggest<\/em> parts of it. Personally, we wish that they could have expanded the story so that he continued to be a lead, but we understand that\u2019s not the direction things were headed. And so did Reg\u00e9-Jean, per his explanation to Variety<\/em> about his departure:<\/p>\n

\u201cOne of the things that is different about this [romance] genre is that the audience knows the arc completes. They come in knowing that, so you can tie people in emotional knots because they have that reassurance that we\u2019re going to come out and we\u2019re going to have the marriage and the baby.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n

We\u2019ll definitely miss the Duke of Hastings, but we\u2019re really looking forward to what Reg\u00e9-Jean does next. No doubt he has a bright future ahead of him!<\/p>\n
