On Monday, Knicks starting point guard Elfrid Payton faced Denis Schroder, the Lakers point guard who will be a free agent this summer. Wednesday, Payton will face Pelicans playmaker Lonzo Ball, also a free agent this summer.<\/p>\n

The Knicks are expected to have interest in both point guards in August. <\/p>\n

But when Payton plays like he did against the Lakers on Monday, who\u2019s to say he won\u2019t be back with the club next season? Especially with Knicks coach Tom Thibodeau\u2019s constant praise for Payton, lauding him Monday for his \u201cterrific\u2019\u2019 outing.<\/p>\n

Payton finished with 20 points in 27 minutes, making 9 of 12 from the field without a 3-pointer in a 111-96 win at the Garden. He snaked into the lane for his runners and floaters and was a plus-27, even if he had just two assists.<\/p>\n

\u201c[He put] a lot of pressure on the rim,\u2019\u2019 Thibodeau said. \u201cDownhill, in the paint, ball pressure, making tough plays, he gives us a physicality, allows us to do more switching than we normally would because of the size and toughness that he has. He\u2019s an important part of this team.\u2019\u2019<\/p>\n

Payton never seems to win over enough Knicks fans, but the only fan that matters is Thibodeau, who continues to start him \u2014 all season long.<\/p>\n

Despite a pelvic injury, a hobbled Schroder still had a good game<\/a>, notching 21 points, but that came mostly in the first half (16) before the Knicks pulled away.<\/p>\n

With Julius Randle in the point forward role, Payton has less ballhandling duties and admits it\u2019s \u201can adjustment.\u2019\u2019 <\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019m just rolling with it,\u2019\u2019 Payton said.<\/p>\n
