We have accepted that almost 1.5 billion petrol and <span style=\"background-color: rgba(46, 146, 255, 0.2);\">diesel-fuelled<\/span>\u00a0cars will be pensioned off because of what\u2019s under their hood. But as we stand on the cusp of a new era, the sobering reality is that simply making the switch to electric is no longer enough.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"The_sustainability_status_quo\"><\/span><b>The sustainability status quo<\/b><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"\/><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"\/><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"\/><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"\/><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The 1.5-degree pathway outlined in The Paris Agreement demands we halve emissions by 2030, and eliminate them altogether by 2050. This will be a challenge for any industry, but when you consider that transportation is one of the biggest polluters globally, you start to understand our uncompromising attitude. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/><\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/><\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If we\u2019re to reach net-zero by 2050, we have to innovate and then eliminate cradle-to-gate C02e emissions. A big ask. And the lesser-known factor in this carbon calculator is the type of energy used to charge them. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/><\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/><\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">An EV will always have less impact than its fossil fuel counterpart. Power it with renewable energy and over its lifetime it will have <\/span><a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.polestar.com\/dato-assets\/11286\/1600176185-20200915polestarlcafinala.pdf\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">half the carbon footprint<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> of an ICE vehicle. This would be a <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/game\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"7\" title=\"Game\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">game<\/a>changer if <\/span><a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nature.com\/articles\/s41893-020-0488-7\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">new research<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> didn\u2019t indicate that only a very low percentage of charging stations are running on renewable energy.<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/><\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/><\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Head of Sustainability at Polestar, Fredrika Klar\u00e9n sees solving this as an easy win. \u201cGiven that the type of charging drastically impacts the lifetime carbon footprint of an EV, the industry needs to lead the way, guiding consumers in how they can impact this footprint when charging their EV. They should be empowered to accelerate the change.\u201d<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/><\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/><\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">So, if we\u2019re really serious about offering a sustainable alternative to fossil fuel cars, governments and energy companies need to join the movement. Putting green energy on the charging grid should be a top priority for politicians and charging station providers. Because this is where electric mobility can become clean mobility.<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/><\/span><b\/><\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"The_Swedish_example\"><\/span><b>The Swedish example<\/b><b><br \/><\/b><b\/><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"\/><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"\/><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Take a look at Sweden, and you\u2019ll see this isn\u2019t an impossible task. Here, <\/span><a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/alltomelbil.se\/arets-statistik-elbilarna-slutar-pa-topp-nar-2020-summeras\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">one in five new cars<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> on the road are purely electric. This becomes even more interesting when you learn they are mainly powered by fossil-free energy.<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/><\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/><\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Swedish-born Klar\u00e9n admits that the EV infrastructure isn\u2019t perfect, but as a consumer, you can be fairly confident that you\u2019re charging with renewable electricity. A significant step in the right direction.<\/span><b\/><\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"The_power_of_choice\"><\/span><b>The power of choice <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/><\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"\/><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"\/><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"\/><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The situation in Sweden is ideal because they\u2019re not asking people to decipher the difference between Global Electricity Mix, EU Electricity Mix, and renewables. The energy almost certainly comes from renewable sources. But by being transparent about the energy they put on the grid, energy suppliers can empower consumers to make informed decisions about how they charge.<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/><\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/><\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cConsumers need to be able to choose renewable energy when charging and that\u2019s where transparency can create accountability amongst charging operators, enabling us to fully embrace this opportunity.\u201d<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/><\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/><\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">There is no denying that the business case behind building charging stations is hard. However, if companies are choosing to power them with cheaper, non-renewable electricity, it defeats the purpose entirely. This is why we utilize <\/span><a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/about.polestar.com\/news\/polestar-2-lca-report\/#:~:text=An%20LCA%20(Life%20Cycle%20Assessment,environmental%20impact%20of%20a%20product.&amp;text=We've%20recently%20performed%20an,and%20its%20end%20of%20life.\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Life Cycle Assessments<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (LCAs) to measure the environmental lifetime impact of our products.
