The Law & Order franchise is poised to continue expanding.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Law & Order: Hate Crimes, a spinoff that was ordered back in 2018 might finally see the light of day.\u00a0<\/p>\n

13 episodes were originally ordered, but the show seemingly entered development hell, while NBC maintained that it was still on the agenda.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Now, Law & Order: SVU showrunner Warren Leight has opened up about the project, and where it could air.\u00a0<\/p>\n

\u201cI think it was perceived to be a better fit with Peacock,\u201d he said of NBC Universal\u2019s new streaming service during THR’s TV Top 5 podcast.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe vocabulary people use when they commit hate crimes is not acceptable on network television, and that\u2019s an interesting consideration.\u201d<\/p>\n

The showrunner went on to speak about how he thinks the show should be made.\u00a0<\/p>\n

\u201cI think [Hate Crimes] is a show that needs to be made,\u201d he said. \u201cWhere it dovetails with SVU, it\u2019s about the toll a hate crime takes on a victim, a victim\u2019s family, and a community. It\u2019s an arena I think needs to be written about. I\u2019d like to see this show go [forward].\u201d<\/p>\n

Co-created with former Law & Order: Special Victims Unit showrunner Warren Leight, the latest installment of the enduring and wildly popular Law & Order franchise is based on New York\u2019s actual Hate Crimes Task Force, the second oldest bias-based task force in the U.S.<\/p>\n

\n \"Confronting<\/img>\n<\/div>\n

The unit, which pledges to uphold a zero-tolerance policy against discrimination of any kind, works under the NYPD’s real Special Victims Unit and often borrows SVU\u2019s detectives to assist in their investigations.<\/p>\n

At the time the series<\/a> was announced, Wolf issued a statement saying, \u201cAs with all of my crime shows, I want to depict what\u2019s really going on in our cities and shine a light on the wide-ranging victims and show that justice can prevail.”<\/p>\n

“Twenty years ago when SVU began, very few people felt comfortable coming forward and reporting these crimes, but when you bring the stories into people\u2019s living rooms \u2013 with characters as empathetic as Olivia Benson \u2013 a real dialogue can begin.”<\/p>\n

\n \"The<\/img>\n<\/div>\n

“That\u2019s what I hope we can do with this new show in a world where hate crimes have reached an egregious level.\u201d<\/p>\n

NBC also has an Elliot Stabler spinoff in the works, and it will bring Christopher Meloni back to the franchise.\u00a0<\/p>\n
