App<\/a>arel retailer Lululemon has a cult following \u2014 and a disturbingly \u201ccult-like\u201d work environment, too, staffers say.\u00a0<\/p>\n

More than a dozen current and former employees (all of whom spoke on the condition of anonymity) of the wellness brand have revealed to Insider<\/a> that Lululemon\u2019s company culture puts an intense amount of pressure on employees to be peppy and fall into line with the brand\u2019s ideals.\u00a0<\/p>\n

\u201cOn the outside looking in, Lululemon seems really kind and really inclusive, as long as who you are includes what they want you to be,\u201d Emma, a former part-time sales associate at a Lululemon store in Canada, told the publication of her two months working for the company in 2018. In her brief time as a Lululemon \u201ceducator\u201d on the sales floor, Emma said she was subjected to regular meetings with her manager about her apparent failure to be sufficiently peppy. \u201cOften, I just came home crying,\u201d she said.\u00a0<\/p>\n

The constant negative feedback continued and her mental health began to decline. Feeling like she \u201ccouldn\u2019t be happy enough to work,\u201d she quit.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Emma\u2019s feelings that Lululemon\u2019s work environment is one of \u201ctoxic positivity\u201d was echoed by others.\u00a0<\/p>\n

\u201cI think they definitely don\u2019t appreciate all types of personalities,\u201d said Erin, an Asian-American woman who used to work at a Minnesota Lululemon store. \u201cAnd it\u2019s harder for minorities to feel like they have a voice during training when they\u2019re constantly being talked over.\u201d<\/p>\n

Lululemon did not respond to The Post\u2019s request for comment.\u00a0<\/p>\n

The types of \u201cpersonalities\u201d that were appreciated were consistently \u201cwhite, able-bodied, for the most part fit-looking\u201d women, added a former Washington metro area Lululemon store worker named Amy.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Many also cited an exercise called \u201cclearing\u201d in which managers have staff together to discuss any issues they have before the start of their shifts.\u00a0<\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

\u201cMaybe you had a really bad day, something bad happened with your boyfriend or with a parent or whatever \u2014 you would clear that in a clearing,\u201d Amy explained. \u201cAnd then after clearing that, you are expected to just kind of bounce back as this idealized, superpositive Lululemon robot.\u201d<\/p>\n

In a statement to The Post, Lululemon said that \u201cthe claims in the Insider article are not consistent with the culture and values of Lululemon today.\u201d <\/p>\n

Furthermore, \u201cLululemon is committed to creating and maintaining an inclusive and positive work environment, and we welcome and encourage employee dialogue and feedback.
