CBS News president Susan Zirinsky is reportedly nearing a deal to step down after just two years at the top and ink a wide-ranging production partnership with parent company ViacomCBS. <\/p>\n

Zirinsky has been president under a short-term contract and is expected to remain in the role until her replacement is named, according to the Wall Street Journal (paywall)<\/a>. <\/p>\n

Insiders told The Post that the decision was mutual, as Zirinsky, a well-respected TV news producer who inspired Holly Hunter\u2019s character in \u201cBroadcast News,\u201d was unhapp<\/a>y in the less hands-on corporate role. <\/p>\n

Zirinsky will add a production gig under her new deal. According to The Journal, the pact will allow her to create content for CBS News and its various shows and platforms, as well as develop content for the new ViacomCBS streaming service, Paramount+.<\/p>\n

The Journal reported<\/a> Tuesday that a search for Zirninsky\u2019s successor has been ongoing for months but a candidate has yet to be named. Sources said Vinnie Malhotra, an executive vice president of nonfiction programming from sister company, Showtime, appears to be in the running. Malhotra did not respond to requests for comment.<\/p>\n

CBS News declined to comment. Zirinsky couldn\u2019t be reached for comment. <\/p>\n

Zirinsky isn\u2019t the only high-powered CBS News exec to leave the company. One of Zirinsky\u2019s top deputies Kim Godwin is expected to grab the role of ABC News president, following the departure of James Goldston earlier this year. ABC News is expected to make the announcement of Godwin\u2019s hire as early as this week, a source said. ABC News did not comment.<\/p>\n

Zirinsky, who has been at CBS News for nearly 40 years in various roles such as executive producer of crime show \u201c48 Hours,\u201d took the helm following a slew of sexual harassment and bullying claims that embroiled the company. <\/p>\n

Then-CBS News president David Rhodes <\/a>departed in early 2019, months after the exits of shamed host Charlie Rose<\/a>,\u00a0CBS chief Les Moonves\u00a0and\u00a0\u201c60 Minutes\u201d boss Jeff Fager.<\/a><\/p>\n

Zirinsky was touted as an historic hire, brought in to reorganize the anchor line up at the network and rev up the ratings of Gayle King\u2019s last-place \u201cCBS This Morning\u201d and \u201cCBS Evening News.\u201d <\/p>\n

Much of Zirinsky\u2019s time was spent in meetings, dealing with corporate bureaucracy, job cuts and managing talent instead of amping up the network\u2019s journalism.<\/p>\n

Under her gaze, CBS renegotiated King\u2019s contract<\/a> and rehauled \u201cCBS This Morning,\u201d sending then-co-host Norah O\u2019Donnell to anchor the evening news amid buzz that the two journalists did not get along<\/a>. <\/p>\n

With O\u2019Donnell as anchor, Zirinsky revamped \u201cCBS Evening News,\u201d updating its format and moving the show to Washington DC from New York, in what one insider called a \u201ccostly,\u201d but \u201cunfruitful move,\u201d as it remains last place in the ratings.\n <\/p><\/div>\n
