Each site has its own filesystem directory and domain name. You can serve different sites to different visitors based on the domain they\u2019re using.<\/p>\n<p>Virtual Hosts are created using the <code>&lt;VirtualHost&gt;<\/code> directive in Apache configuration files. They\u2019re normally stored in the <code>sites-available<\/code> directory within Apache\u2019s installation location. On Debian systems, this is usually <code>\/etc\/apache2<\/code>; other distributions may use <code>\/etc\/httpd<\/code>.<\/p>\n<p>We\u2019ll assume you\u2019ve already got Apache up-and-running. We\u2019ll create two separate Virtual Hosts, <code>a.example.com<\/code> and <code>b.example.com<\/code>. There\u2019s no limit to the number of Virtual Hosts you can use \u2013 if you need a dozen sites on one server, Apache will oblige.<\/p>\n<h2 id=\"configuring-the-sites\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Configuring_the_Sites\"><\/span>Configuring the Sites<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>Each site needs its own filesystem directory. You\u2019ll place the website\u2019s files, such as HTML, CSS and Java<a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/download-scripts-themes-apps\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"9\" title=\"Download Scripts &amp; Themes &amp; Apps\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Script<\/a>, within this directory. It\u2019s termed the <code>DocumentRoot<\/code> by Apache, as it\u2019s the root from which documents are served.<\/p>\n<p>You can locate your sites anywhere on your system. You\u2019ll often see Virtual Hosts stored within <code>\/var\/www<\/code>, with each site getting its own folder:<\/p>\n<pre>sudo mkdir -p \/var\/www\/a.example.com&#13;\nsudo mkdir -p \/var\/www\/b.example.com<\/pre>\n<p><code>\/var\/www<\/code> is normally owned by <code>root<\/code>, so we\u2019re using <code>sudo<\/code> to create the sub-directories. Next, change the ownership of the document roots to your own user and set appropriate permissions. This will allow Apache to read files while giving you write access so you can add your content.<\/p>\n<pre>sudo chown -R $USER:$USER \/var\/www\/a.example.com&#13;\nsudo chown -R $USER:$USER \/var\/www\/b.example.com&#13;\nsudo chmod -R 755 \/var\/www<\/pre>\n<p>Copy your website files into the directories. We\u2019ll use two simple <code>index.html<\/code> files:<\/p>\n<p><strong><code>a.example.com\/index.html<\/code><\/strong><\/p>\n<div class=\"wp-geshi-highlight-wrap5\">\n<div class=\"wp-geshi-highlight-wrap4\">\n<div class=\"wp-geshi-highlight-wrap3\">\n<div class=\"wp-geshi-highlight-wrap2\">\n<div class=\"wp-geshi-highlight-wrap\">\n<div class=\"wp-geshi-highlight\">\n<div class=\"html\">\n<pre class=\"de1\">&lt;html&gt;&#13;\n    &lt;body&gt;&#13;\n        &lt;h1&gt;a.example.com&lt;\/h1&gt;&#13;\n    &lt;\/body&gt;&#13;\n&lt;\/html&gt;<\/pre>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p><strong><code>b.example.com\/index.html<\/code><\/strong><\/p>\n<div class=\"wp-geshi-highlight-wrap5\">\n<div class=\"wp-geshi-highlight-wrap4\">\n<div class=\"wp-geshi-highlight-wrap3\">\n<div class=\"wp-geshi-highlight-wrap2\">\n<div class=\"wp-geshi-highlight-wrap\">\n<div class=\"wp-geshi-highlight\">\n<div class=\"html\">\n<pre class=\"de1\">&lt;html&gt;&#13;\n    &lt;body&gt;&#13;\n        &lt;h1&gt;b.example.com&lt;\/h1&gt;&#13;\n    &lt;\/body&gt;&#13;\n&lt;\/html&gt;<\/pre>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<h2 id=\"configuring-apache\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Configuring_Apache\"><\/span>Configuring Apache<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>Now you\u2019re ready to configure your Virtual Hosts. Create a new Virtual Host file for each of the sites. It doesn\u2019t matter what you name the file; by convention, it usually matches your site\u2019s hostname.<\/p>\n<p>At minimum, each Virtual Host needs to declare two properties:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong><code>ServerName<\/code><\/strong> \u2013 The hostname (domain) that the site is going to be served from.<\/li>\n<li><strong><code>DocumentRoot<\/code><\/strong> \u2013 The filesystem location to serve for this Virtual Host.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Here\u2019s an example configuration for our two sites:<\/p>\n<p><strong><code>\/etc\/apache2\/sites-available\/a.example.com.conf<\/code><\/strong><\/p>\n<pre>&lt;VirtualHost *:80&gt;&#13;\n    ServerName a.example.com&#13;\n    DocumentRoot \/var\/www\/a.example.com&#13;\n&lt;\/VirtualHost&gt;<\/pre>\n<p><strong><code>\/etc\/apache2\/sites-available\/b.example.com.conf<\/code><\/strong><\/p>\n<pre>&lt;VirtualHost *:80&gt;&#13;\n    ServerName b.example.com&#13;\n    DocumentRoot \/var\/www\/b.example.com&#13;\n&lt;\/VirtualHost&gt;<\/pre>\n<p>This basic setup is enough to get the two sites live! The <code>*:80<\/code> means Apache will consider using this Virtual Host for any request arriving on port 80. They\u2019ll be disambiguated later on by the <code>ServerName<\/code> declarations.<\/p>\n<h2 id=\"enabling-virtual-hosts\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Enabling_Virtual_Hosts\"><\/span>Enabling Virtual Hosts<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>Adding a Virtual Host to <code>sites-available<\/code> makes it <em>available<\/em> but not active. You need to manually enable each site you want to use. Virtual Host configs to enable should be symlinked into <code>\/etc\/apache2\/sites-enabled<\/code> (or <code>\/etc\/httpd\/sites-enabled<\/code>).<\/p>\n<p>On Debian systems, you can use the <code>a2ensite<\/code> command to simplify this step:<\/p>\n<pre>a2ensite a.example.com&#13;\na2ensite b.example.com<\/pre>\n<p>On other distributions, use the <code>ln<\/code> command to create a symlink manually.<\/p>\n<pre>sudo ln -s \/etc\/httpd\/sites-available\/a.example.com.conf \/etc\/httpd\/sites-enabled\/a.example.com.conf&#13;\nsudo ln -s \/etc\/httpd\/sites-available\/a.example.com.conf \/etc\/httpd\/sites-enabled\/b.example.com.conf<\/pre>\n<p>Finally, restart Apache to apply your new configuration. Virtual Host changes require a server restart after you\u2019ve added them to <code>sites-enabled<\/code>.<\/p>\n<pre>sudo apache2ctl restart<\/pre>\n<p>You should now be able to see Apache serving your two different sites. If you\u2019ve not got DNS resolving to your server, you can modify your system\u2019s <code>\/etc\/hosts<\/code> file to test your setup.<\/p>\n<p>Add the following lines to <code>\/etc\/hosts<\/code>:<\/p>\n<pre>127.0.0.1 a.example.com&#13;\n127.0.0.1 b.example.com<\/pre>\n<p>This will force both domains to resolve back to your own system. You\u2019ll now be able to visit them in your browser to see the two different Virtual Host pages.<\/p>\n<h2 id=\"site-aliases\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Site_Aliases\"><\/span>Site Aliases<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>If you want to serve the <em>same<\/em> site on multiple domains, use the <code>ServerAlias<\/code> directive in your Virtual Host. Each alias will be considered when Apache matches your Virtual Host against incoming requests. The Virtual Host will be used if the request\u2019s <code>Host<\/code> header matches a <code>ServerAlias<\/code> or the <code>ServerName<\/code>.<\/p>\n<pre>&lt;VirtualHost *:80&gt;&#13;\n    ServerName a.example.com&#13;\n    ServerAlias example.com&#13;\n    ServerAlias www.example.com&#13;\n    DocumentRoot \/var\/www\/a.example.com&#13;\n&lt;\/VirtualHost&gt;<\/pre>\n<p>This example would serve the <code>a<\/code> site on three domains, without having to repeat any configuration details. You <em>must<\/em> use <code>ServerAlias<\/code> to define multiple domains \u2013 repeating <code>ServerName<\/code> is possible but it will override the earlier uses.<\/p>\n<h2 id=\"other-configuration-options\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Other_Configuration_Options\"><\/span>Other Configuration Options<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>Many of Apache\u2019s server configuration options can be used with Virtual Hosts. They\u2019ll override the global server settings when Apache handles a request using the Virtual Host.<\/p>\n<pre>&lt;VirtualHost *:80&gt;&#13;\n    ServerName a.example.com&#13;\n    DocumentRoot \/var\/www\/a.example.com&#13;\n    DirectoryIndex my-index.html&#13;\n&#13;\n    &lt;Directory \/var\/www\/a.example.com&gt;&#13;\n        AllowOverride All&#13;\n        Options -Indexes&#13;\n        Require all granted&#13;\n    &lt;\/Directory&gt;&#13;\n&#13;\n    ErrorLog ${APACHE_LOG_DIR}\/error.log&#13;\n    CustomLog ${APACHE_LOG_DIR}\/access.log combined&#13;\n&lt;\/VirtualHost&gt;<\/pre>\n<p>This Virtual Host applies many more settings. <code>my-index.html<\/code> is served by default, instead of <code>index.html<\/code>, and custom logging locations are used. In addition, extra settings are applied to the document root itself, using the <code>Directory<\/code> block. <code>.htaccess<\/code> overrides are permitted (<code>AllowOverride All<\/code>) and Apache\u2019s default directory listing pages are disabled (<code>Options -Indexes<\/code>).<\/p>\n<h2 id=\"ip-address-hosts\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"IP_Address_Hosts\"><\/span>IP Address Hosts<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>Apache also supports IP-based hosts besides the name-based hosts we\u2019ve seen so far. IP-based hosts are ideal when your server has multiple network interfaces, such as an internal company network and the public internet. You can serve a different site depending on the network interface used.<\/p>\n<pre>&lt;VirtualHost 172.17.0.1&gt;&#13;\n    ServerName a.example.com&#13;\n    DocumentRoot \/var\/www\/a&#13;\n&lt;\/VirtualHost&gt;&#13;\n&#13;\n&lt;VirtualHost 172.17.0.1&gt;&#13;\n    ServerName b.example.com&#13;\n    DocumentRoot \/var\/www\/b&#13;\n&lt;\/VirtualHost&gt;&#13;\n&#13;\n&lt;VirtualHost 192.168.0.1&gt;&#13;\n    ServerName a.example.com&#13;\n    DocumentRoot \/var\/www\/a2&#13;\n&lt;\/VirtualHost<\/pre>\n<p>In this example, requests made to <code>a.example.com<\/code> via the interface with IP <code>192.168.0.1<\/code> would receive different content to those sent via <code>172.17.0.1<\/code>. In addition, users of the latter IP would be able to access <code>b.example.com<\/code>. This site isn\u2019t exposed to users connecting via <code>192.168.0.1<\/code>.<\/p>\n<p>This approach lets you use one server for your corporate intranet and public website. Bind the internal sites to your server\u2019s LAN IP; run the public hosts against its WAN address.<\/p>\n<h2 id=\"virtual-host-matching\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Virtual_Host_Matching\"><\/span>Virtual Host Matching<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>Apache\u2019s Virtual Host resolution routine <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/httpd.apache.org\/docs\/current\/vhosts\/details.html\">is well-documented<\/a> and quite straightforward.<\/p>\n<p>In <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/general\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"3\" title=\"General\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">general<\/a>, Apache tries to match the <code>Host<\/code> request header against a <code>ServerName<\/code> or <code>ServerAlias<\/code> field in a Virtual Host configuration. If there\u2019s multiple matches, Apache will use the <em>first<\/em> matching Virtual Host it found.<\/p>\n<p>Virtual Hosts are sorted in order of filename. If you <em>need<\/em> a site to match before another, rename its configuration file so it\u2019ll sort before the target site. You can add a numerical prefix such as <code>000-a.example.com.conf<\/code>. Most of the time this will be unnecessary \u2013 if all your sites have unique domains, you should never encounter a conflict.<\/p>\n<h2 id=\"conclusion\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Conclusion\"><\/span>Conclusion<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>Apache Virtual Hosts let you break down multi-site configuration into self-contained definition files. You can independently enable and disable each site by linking it into <code>sites-enabled<\/code>.<\/p>\n<p>Many <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/httpd.apache.org\/docs\/current\/vhosts\">configuration options<\/a> are available for Virtual Hosts.
