You want to work in tech, but not at our company<\/b><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span>At a startup, the first 20-30 employees are fundamental to the culture and success of the entire enterprise. A startup\u2019s journey is saturated with challenges and difficulties and the thing that\u2019s going to get us through it is purpose. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>If you don\u2019t connect with our purpose, or you don\u2019t feel it, that\u2019s fine \u2014 but that probably means this isn\u2019t the job for you. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>It\u2019s easy to spot when this isn\u2019t there, mainly because it\u2019s so easy to spot when it is. Some people are just so excited to join they can\u2019t put it into words. You\u2019ll hear phrases like, \u201c<\/span>I can\u2019t even describe how perfect this is for me.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><span>We hear a lot about product-market fit and increasingly about product-founder fit. But there\u2019s also <em>product-employee<\/em> fit. Do you and your skills and interests<\/span><span>make sense for this product? Will your <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/download-scripts-themes-apps\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"9\" title=\"Download Scripts &amp; Themes &amp; Apps\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">app<\/a>roach and passions fit with the team ethos? <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>This is usually why technically amazing candidates are passed over. <\/span><span>In the long term, it\u2019s in everyone\u2019s interest. If it\u2019s not a role where you\u2019ll care about the product, then not getting the job means you can pursue opportunities you truly care about.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"2_Youre_a_brilliant_jerk\"><\/span><b>2. You\u2019re a brilliant jerk<\/b><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span>There are some people out there who are just brilliant. Throughout the interview process, you see some soft-skill red flags, but you want to hire them anyway because you really need their skills right now and their CV is just<em> so good<\/em>. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>After all, I\u2019m building a team of geniuses, right? Wrong. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>No matter how brilliant you are, if you\u2019re not able to self-reflect and display empathy, it will create issues for the wider team. Every startup is a team, you cannot do things in isolation. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>When a person can\u2019t work collaboratively, their impact on morale is significant. They are, to use Ben Horowitz\u2019s phrase, a brilliant jerk. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>If you\u2019re a CEO, don\u2019t fall into this trap, it\u2019s not worth it. And, if you\u2019re job seeking, don\u2019t forget the vital importance of being a team player.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"3_Youre_the_right_person_with_the_wrong_skills\"><\/span><b>3. You\u2019re the right person with the wrong skills<\/b><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span>You might find a company that you love and connect with. The role feels like the right fit and you submit an application with excitement. And it\u2019s genuinely fantastic to receive these applications; full of enthusiasm and passion. But that doesn\u2019t mean we can offer you the job.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>A startup requires specific talents at different times. The evolution of the company happens so rapidly, that the team requirements are constantly shifting. Especially in the early days of the company (let\u2019s say, the first 3-5 years) there\u2019s little room for <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/general\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"3\" title=\"General\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">general<\/a>ists. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>A startup needs experienced people because you\u2019re probably going to be the only person in the team with that skillset, so there\u2019s no one to learn from. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>If you\u2019re a data scientist, you might be <\/span><i><span>the<\/span><\/i><span> data scientist. You can\u2019t go to someone to ask tricky data questions and if you\u2019re unsure about anything, it\u2019s hard to troubleshoot. You could be setting up an entire function within the business, at lightning speed, with little margin for error.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>If you don\u2019t have that very specific skill set that is needed at that moment, no matter how passionate you are, we can\u2019t hire you.
