A group of students at a Texas school set up a slave auction pretending to sell their Black classmates on social media<\/a>.<\/p>\n

A screenshot of the Snapchat group called \u201cSlave Trade\u201d provided to the Fort Worth-Star Telegram<\/a> shows students at the Daniel Ninth Grade Campus in Aledo saying they would spend $1 for one classmate and $100 for another.<\/p>\n

A group of students set up the Snapchat group, activists told the news<\/a>paper.<\/p>\n

\u201cCan you imagine what it\u2019s like for somebody to put a price on your head?\u201d said Tony Crawford, an organizer for the Parker County Progressives. \u201cI cannot imagine the embarrassment and hurt that people you might be friends with are having that conversation.\u201d<\/p>\n

The Aledo Independent School District announced Monday<\/a> it got reports that students were bullied and harassed \u201cbased on their race\u201d more than two weeks ago and launched an immediate investigation involving law enforcement.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe made a formal determination that racial harassment and cyberbullying had occurred and assigned disciplinary consequences in accordance with our policies and the Student Code of conduct,\u201d district officials said. \u201cThis incident has caused tremendous pain for the victims, their families, and other students of colors and their families, and for that we are deeply saddened.\u201d<\/p>\n

The district\u2019s statement did not detail the incident that led to the unspecified discipline for the students, but denounced the usage of \u201cinapp<\/a>ropriate, offensive and racially charged language\u201d and conduct.<\/p>\n

The Snapchat group\u2019s name was changed at some point from \u201cSlave Trade\u201d with emojis of a Black man, a gun and a white police officer to names including racial slurs and the words \u201cfarm\u201d and \u201cauction,\u201d WFAA reported<\/a>.<\/p>\n

One student mentioned in the group later received a screenshot of the conversation, a parent told the station.<\/p>\n

Jo Jessup, a parent of the ninth-grader at the school, said the district sent an email to parents last week describing an incident of cyberbullying and harassment that lacked details.<\/p>\n

\u201cPart of the issue is parents were really upset that the original memo that came out said nothing about racism,\u201d Jessup said.<\/p>\n

A district spokeswoman declined to say how many students were punished for the slave-trading group or what discipline they received, NBC News reported<\/a>.<\/p>\n

A father of three former students in the district said he was disgusted by the students\u2019 actions.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt makes me sick from the standpoint, \u2018Who do they think they are?\u2019\u201d Mark Grubbs told KXAS<\/a>. \u201cWhat gives them the right to think they can do that to someone else?\u201d<\/p>\n

Grubbs was also upset that district officials hadn\u2019t been clearer from the onset. Its first notice to parents did not include the word \u201cracism,\u201d KXAS reported.<\/p>\n

\u201cCalling it cyberbullying rather than calling it racism \u2026 that is the piece that really gets under my skin,\u201d Grubbs continued.<\/p>\n

Monday\u2019s statement was the first public message issued by the district on the matter.<\/p>\n

\u201cThere is no room or racism or hatred in the Aledo ISD, period,\u201d the statement read. \u201cUsing inappropriate, offensive and racially charged language and conduct is completely unacceptable and is prohibited by district policy.\u201d<\/p>\n

The president of the Parker County NAACP chapter told the Star-Telegram he plans to discuss the incident Monday during an Aledo school board meeting.\n <\/p><\/div>\n
